MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High girls tennis team took another step in the Class AAAAA tournament on Tuesday, defeating Union Grove in McDonough, 4-1.
The Lady Packers will advance to play the winner of the Camden County-Newnan match.
Colquitt’s girls will have to go on the road again for the third round match, which must be completed by next Tuesday.
Colquitt County coach Linda Berl said her team was challenged by the Lady Wolverines.
“It was a good match for us,” Berl said.
“We had to play well in all positions and in the second round of state, that’s what you need.”
The Colquitt County girls won their first-round match 5-0 over Morrow at home last week and were not challenged.
Union Grove, the Region 2-AAAAA champion, was tougher.
The Lady Packers, now 15-5 on the season, won their first point at No. 2 doubles where sophomores Kate Reeves and Alexa Isaacs overcame an early bout with nerves to win 6-4, 6-0 over Courtney Adams and Marley Seymour. Reeves and Isaacs are now 9-1 this year.
Carli Hester won at No. 2 singles over Hawley Emanuele 6-1, 6-0, for Colquitt County’s second point.
“She played lights out,” Berl said of Hester, another of the Lady Packers five sophomores. “She dominated.”
The Lady Packers elder statesmen, Savanna Lamon and Jessica Harvin, took care of business at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Kaitlin Clipper and Alisha Roper, 6-2, 6-1, to clinch the match.
Harvin and Lamon are now 15-1 on the season and have won nine matches in a row.
The Lady Packers lost a close match at No. 1 singles, where Cara McCalley fell 3-6, 3-6.
Laura Murphy gave the Lady Packers their fourth point when she disposed of Kali Pilgrim 6-1, 6-2.
Murphy’s win raised her record to 10-5 this season.
