MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team has drawn a region champion in the second round of the Class AAAAA state tournament, but if Lady Packers coach Linda Berl is apprehensive, she doesn’t sound like it.

“If we play like we’ve been playing, we should be OK,” Berl said on Monday, the day before her team travels to McDonough to meet Union Grove.

The Lady Packers have won their last four matches, including a 5-0 victory over Morrow last Tuesday at home in their state playoff opener.

Colquitt’s girls will take a 14-5 record into the match with the Lady Wolverines, who are 14-3 themselves.

Union Grove won the Region 2-AAAAA championship, earning a date with Region 3’s No. 4 team, Windsor Forest, in the first round.

The Lady Wolverines prevailed, but it was by a 3-2 score.

Union Grove won at No. 2 singles and at both doubles positions.

The Lady Packers themselves are particularly strong at doubles.

At No. 1, the team of Savanna Lamon and Jessica Harvin will take a 14-1 record into the match.

The two juniors have won their last eight matches in a row.

At No. 2, Kate Reeves and Alexa Isaacs are 8-1.

Colquitt will have three sophomores playing singles: Cara McCalley at No. 1, Carli Hester at No. 2 and Laura Murphy at No. 3.

And while the Lady Packers have counted heavily on the two doubles teams this season, Berl said she would like an effort like the one the team gave in the victory over Morrow.

“I challenge the girls,” Berl said. “I told them, ‘Let’s make a statement and win 5-0 again.’”

Several of the Lady Packers have battled illnesses in recent days and Berl said she doesn’t expect any of her top seven players to be unable to go today.

But she said the team was able to build some depth during the season, with all the players on the roster taking the court in at least six matches.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in our team,” she said. “I feel like our depth, top to bottom, will serve us well in this match.”

Union Grove also advanced to the state tournament last year and was defeated by Camden County.

In the next round, Camden was eliminated by the Lady Packers.

The Colquitt County-Union Grove winner will meet the Camden County-Newnan winner next week.

Three Region 1-AAAAA teams advanced in the first round and will play again this week.

Region champion Warner Robins won 5-0 over Paulding County last week and will be home to play host to Luella, a 4-1 winner of Johnson of Savannah.

Coffee, Region 1’s No. 4 team, advanced with a 3-2 win over Hiram. The Lady Trojans will face Savannah Arts, a 5-0 winner over Newton County.

Only No. 3 Tift County was eliminated in the first round, falling 2-3 to Newnan.
