MOULTRIE — The loss of All-State gymnast Meghan Marshall proved to be too much for the defending state champion Colquitt County gymnastics team to overcome.
The Lady Packers finished fourth in the state championships held Friday at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta.
Roswell won its seventh title with a 110.025, with Milton coming in second with a 108.475. The two schools have now combined to win nine of the last 11 state championships. Colquitt County had one of the other two last year.
Newnan was third on Friday, with a 107.95. The Lady Packers scored a 106.55.
Tift County’s Morgan Jones repeated as the state all-around champion.
Colquitt qualified for the finals with a fifth-place finish last week at The Lovett School and improved one place on Friday, helped by the addition of Leah May, who coach Donna Marshall said had an outstanding meet.
“We couldn’t have asked for more,” Marshall said.
Colquitt County freshman Kambria Blakely was fourth on vault with a 9.375 to earn All-State honors.
The Lady Packers had to compete at area and at state without three-time All-State gymnast Meghan Marshall, who was lost for the season in March with an ankle injury.
“I think we felt the pressure tonight that we didn’t feel last week,” Marshall said.
