MOULTRIE — The 2007 Colquitt County High boys soccer team has already made some significant strides this season, getting the program’s first winning record since 2004 and first playoff appearance since 2004.
There are some other milestones within reach as well as the Packers prepare to meet Paulding County at 5 p.m. today at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium in a first-round Class AAAAA state playoff match.
These Packers, who are 14-3 and finished second in Region 1-AAAAA, already own the second-most victories in a season by any Colquitt County boys soccer team, tying the 1999 and 2000 squads, which finished 14-1-1 and 14-3-1 respectively. Only the 2002 team, which went 16-4 has more victories.
And it was on April 30, 2002, that the Packers last won a state playoff match.
Jay Strickland scored the only goal of the first-round match as the Packers defeated Griffin 1-0 in Moultrie.
The Packers figure to have a chance to end that five-year drought when they meet the Patriots today.
Paulding County is the No. 3 team from Region 4-AAAAA.
The Patriots are 11-6 and are coming off a 3-2 loss last Friday to Sequoyah, which remained unbeaten at 18-0.
Before meeting Sequoyah, Paulding County had won seven of eight.
The Packers have won six of their last seven.
“Our goal, before the season, was to play 20 matches,” said Packers co-head coach Mell Wier. “So we need to win at least two more.”
Wier and co-head coach Rob Craft will send out Daniel Garcia, Salvador Duque and Oscar Quintanilla at the forward positions.
Matt DeMott and Spencer Clayton will be the center midfielders, with Beau Holden and D.J. Vanzant the outside midfielders. The defense will be led by Stephen Adcock, Tyler Mobley and Daniel Phillips. Colby Browning will be in the nets.
Wier said that the Packers have given up just 16 goals in 17 matches and three of those came on penalty kicks.
“So our defense has given up just 13 goals,” Wier said. “Our defense has been set all year and we’ve been solid on defense.”
Garcia, a sophomore and a two-year starter, leads the Packers in scoring with 14 goals and six assists.
Although he twisted a knee in a non-high school match on Sunday, he has assured Wier that he’ll be ready to play today.
Duque, a senior, is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and an assist.
Quintanilla, the senior co-captain, has four goals and three assists.
DeMott, another of the team’s captains, has six goals and three assists. Vanzant and Zapote also have scored four goals. Brooks also has recorded six assists.
“I think as long as we do what we’ve done all year, we’ll give everyone a good match,” Wier said.
Also today in state boys soccer, Warner Robins, the No. 3 team from Region 1-AAAAA, will travel to meet East Coweta, the No. 2 team from Region 4; Tift County, the No. 4 team from Region 1, will travel to meet Region 4 champion Newnan; and Region 1 champion Houston County will play host to Tri-Cities, the No. 4 team from Region 4.
