MOULTRIE — The Lee County High baseball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie and deal Colquitt County a 9-6 non-Region 1-AAAAA loss on Tuesday at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park.

The Packers scored all six of their runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead, but never scored again.

Colquitt County had won three in a row and four of its last five, but could not come up with a clutch hit in the final five innings against the Trojans.

Lee County raises its record to 14-8.

The Packers had a chance to get back to .500, but drop to 10-12 overall as they prepare to travel to Douglas for a key Region 1-AAAAA meeting with Coffee High on Friday.

The Packers will still have a shot at a playoff berth when they meet the Trojans.

A win would tie Colquitt County with Valdosta and Coffee at 5-5.

On Tuesday, Valdosta dealt region-leading Lowndes a 6-2 defeat; Coffee shut out Houston County 14-0; and Tift County smacked six home runs in a 15-0 win over Warner Robins.

Lowndes continues to lead the region with a 7-2 record. Tift County and Coffee are in second at 5-4. Valdosta is 5-5. Colquitt County is 4-5, Houston County is 4-6 and Warner Robins is 3-7.

The Packers on Tuesday were without head coach Eric McCranie, who was with wife Rochelle as she delivered their second child and first son.

While at the hospital with his family, McCranie missed seeing his team turn a triple play in the first inning.

With runners on first and second, Thomas Nichols grounded to third baseman Patrick Taylor, who threw to Carter Jones at second for a force there, and the Jones relay to Tyler Perryman retired Nichols for what appeared to be a 5-4-3 double play.

But Jeremy Sheffield, who had been on second, rounded third base too far, and was throw out by Perryman.

Lee County did take the lead in the top of the second on a two-out run-scoring single by Chandler Medley.

The Packers then erupted for six runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Trojans committed two errors and issued three walks. John Michael Harrison and Carter Jones each drove in one run in the inning. Andrew Wallace added a two-run single.

But the Trojans kept pecking away.

Matt Bacon cut the Packers lead to 6-2 with a home run off starter Andrew McDowell in the third. A triple by Brian Hegel drove in the third run in the fourth.

Harrison came on and gave up a double, a single and a pair of walks as Lee County tied the game with three runs in the fifth.

A double play got the Packers out of the sixth, but the Trojans jumped on Anthony Cortes, the fifth Packers pitcher in seventh, scoring three runs on four hits and a walk.

Colquitt had nine hits, including three by Harrison. Jones added two. Wallace, Perryman, Spenser Richardson and Matt Weaver had the others.
