Soccer Pack rolls into postseason

MOULTRIE — After losing 2-1 to Houston County last Friday in a match that cost them a chance at winning the Region 1-AAAAA championship, the Colquitt County soccer Packers didn’t look back.

Colquitt’s boys won their last two matches by shutouts on back-to-back nights and will take a 14-3 record into next week’s first-round playoff match.

The Packers defeated Lowndes 1-0 in Tuesday’s Senior Night match in the final tuneup for the state tournament match against Paulding County, the No. 3 team from Region 1-AAAAA.

Colquitt County coach Mell Wier said he hoped to schedule the match for Wednesday, April 25.

The match could be played the day before. But also scheduled for that day is a Colquitt County girls state playoff match at home against Morrow, a Colquitt County home baseball game against Lee County and the Region 1-AAAAA golf tournament in Warner Robins.

A victory over Paulding County next week would continue what has been an extraordinary season for the Packers.

Colquitt was just 6-11 last year and had not made the state playoffs since 2004.

But this season, the Packers lost only to region champion Houston County twice and to Tift County, a defeat they later avenged.

“Our guys are real happy with the season,” Wier said. “We would have liked to have won the region, but to have made the progress we did and finish second and to get to host a first-round playoff match this year is great. We exceeded our expectations, which just shows what faith, believing in each other and hard work can get you.

“Now we have to refocus and get ready to start the ‘second season.’”

The Packers are led in scoring this season by sophomore Daniel Garcia, who has 14 goals and six assists.

Senior co-captain Matt DeMott has six goals and a penalty kick and has three assists.

The other two Colquitt County co-captains are seniors Tyler Mobley and Oscar Quintanilla.

After its second loss the Houston County, the Packers blanked Warner Robins 2-0 on Monday and, leg-weary, shut out Lowndes on Tuesday.

The Packers only goal on Tuesday was scored by Spencer Clayton in the first half, with an assist going to Daniel Carranza. The goal was the first of the season for Clayton, a junior.

“We had a ton of opportunities, but just couldn’t put it in the net,” Wier said.

“Toward the end of the match, you could tell both teams had played the night before.”
