Middle school track teams perform well

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school girls track team was third and the boys team was fourth in the recent South Georgia Athletic Conference meet in Tifton.
The middle school Lady Packers were led by Maranda Trim, who finished first in both the 800 meters and the mile, defending the conference championships she won as a sixth-grader in 2006.
Trim also finished fifth in the hurdles.
Meaghan May was second in the 800 meters and Shabria Reed was second in the mile. Reed also was fourth in the 800 meters and May was fourth in both the mile and long jump.
Also turning in a fourth-place finish at the meet was Bria Wallace. Candace Green was fifth in the high jump and Destiny Giddens was sixth in he 800 meters.
The 4×100 relay team of May, Trim, Sarah Strong and Erika Tolbert finished sixth.
During the season, Trim set the Colquitt County middle school record in the mile with a 5:56.
The 4×100 team of May, Trim, Strong and Tolbert also set a school record with a 54.80.
Green tied the Colquitt County middle school record in the high jump with a 4-foot, 2-inch jump. May tied the long jump record with a 14-6.
“If the girls all return, they have a definite shot at the region championship next year,” coach Link Whittaker said. “They almost swept the medals in both the 800 and mile and they are all sixth- and seventh-graders.
“The 4×100 No. 2 team, all sixth-graders, also competed well this year.”
Tevin King took first place and set a Colquitt County middle school record with a 19-foot, 4-inch jump at the conference meet.
“Tevin told me last year that his goal was to set the ling jump record,” Whittaker said. “His longest jump before was an 18-5. The record with 18-10.5 I didn’t think he could do it.”
Diamonte Ridley also brought a gold medal back from the conference meet, winning the 400 meters with a 57.53.
Carlos Johnson was third in the 800 meters with a 2:27.
The 4×200 relay team of Ridley, Dominque Wiley, Dimitri Suggs and Draoone Hampton was third with a Colquitt County middle school record-setting 1:41.72.
Taking fourth-place finishes were Gary Thomas, discus, 115-4; Wiley, high jump, 5-feet, 2 inches; Hampton, 100 meters, 11:50; and Anthony Brumbley, mile, 5:43.
Wiley’s high jump tied the Colquitt County middle school record.
Finishing fifth were Cornelius James, high jump, 5-feet; Ridley, hurdles, 13.55; the 4×100 rleay team of King, Hampton, Ridley and Ricky Williams, 47:46; and Hampton, 200 meters, 24.68.
Sixth-place finishes went to King, in the 100 meters, with a 11:62, and in the 200 meters, with a 24.97.
Also during the season, Thomas set the Colquitt County middle school shot put record with a toss of 37-feet, 4 inches.
“I was pleased that the guys were in the top five in all events except the shot put,” Whittaker said. “They medaled in four of 12 events and just missed medaling in four others with four fourth-place finishes.”
