MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls tennis team, which finished as the Region 1-AAAAA runner-up, will play host to Morrow at 3 p.m. next Tuesday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex in the first round of the Class AAAAA state tournament.

Morrow is the No. 3 team from Region 4.

The Lady Packers tuned up for the match with a 4-1 road victory over Valdosta on Tuesday.

Colquitt’s girls will take a 13-5 overall record and 10-2 region record into the postseason.

Warner Robins finished first in the region. Colquitt was second, Tift County finished third and Coffee bumped Lowndes to finish fourth.

On Tuesday, Cara McCalley fell to Jessica Sharp 4-6, 2-6 at No. 1 singles.

Meghan Traylor defeated Heidi Wigley 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Jana Harvin got her first singles start and won over Cathy Moody 6-2, 6-3.

Dresden Melton and Christin Smith won at No. 1 singles over Shontae Slocumb and Ashley Holliman 6-0, 6-1.

Valdosta forfeited at No. 2 doubles.

The Colquitt County boys fell 0-5 to Valdosta and finished in a tie for fourth place with Tift County.

But the Blue Devils had the tie-breaker and will go to the state playoffs at the region’s No. 4 team.

The Packers, who finish 10-8 overall and 5-7 in the region, will not advance.

“We were closer this year,” coach Grant Hammack said. “We’ve got a good group of kids. They left everything they had on the court.”

And with no seniors, the Packers will have a strong nucleus coming back for the 2008 season.

“Valdosta will still be the cream of the crop next season, but we should be right up there,” Hammack said.

On Tuesday, Austin York lost at No. 1 singles to Valdosta senior Greg Tullos 0-6, 1-6.

At No. 2 singles, freshman Blake Jenkins fell to Jamie Childree 1-6, 0-6. Brian Berl filled in for the injured Shaun Soderstrom at No. 3 singles and lost to Parker Childree 0-6, 2-6.

At No. 1 doules, Zach Owen and Chris Harvin fell to Tommy Cangelosi and Stephen Moore 4-6, 6-2, 3-6. At No. 2 doubles, Barclay Mitchell and Zach Clifton lost to Dillon Tullos and Savin Patel 4-6, 3-6.

In extra matches, Christian Edwards lost 7-7(3-7); Lee Veasey lost 3-8; and the double team of Stephen Tyus and Morgan Castellow won 8-1.
