MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys soccer team, which finished second in the final Region 1-AAAAA standings, will open the state playoffs at home next week.
The Packers, who defeated Warner Robins 2-0 on Monday, are expected to meet Paulding County on either Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
Paulding is the No. 3 team from Region 4-AAAAA.
The Colquitt County boys took a 13-3 overall record and an 8-3 Region 1-AAAAA record into the regular-season finale against Lowndes on Tuesday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The result of the match was unavailable at press time, but it had no bearing on the Packers postseason plans.
Houston County will finish first in the region, with the Packers second. Lowndes and Tift County were still batting to determine which finished third and which finished fourth.
Against Warner Robins on Monday, the Packers got a first half goal by D.J. Vanzant off an excellent cross from Beau Holden to take a 1-0 halftime lead.
Stephen Adcock added the second goal on a free kick from just outside the box in the second half.
Keeper Colby Browning kept the shutout in order by stopping a penalty kick in the first half.
“We played very well the whole match,” coach Mell Wier said.
A string of seven straight trips to the state playoffs ended this week when the Colquitt County girls soccer team finished an injury-plagued season with losses to Warner Robins and Lowndes.
On Monday, the Lady Packers led the undefeated Demonettes 2-0 at the half, but Warner Robins scored three goals, including the winner with just 15 seconds left.
The 3-2 loss left the Lady Packers hoping to knock off Lowndes on Tuesday to finish strong.
But Paloma Perez scored three times to lead the Vikettes to a 5-1 victory.
“We were tired,” Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis said. “We played a heck of a game last night. They were happy with the way they played against Warner Robins. That’s the way they want to remember the season.”
The team was hurt by injuries much of the season.
The Lady Packers finish 8-8-1 overall and 4-8 in the region.
The Colquitt County girls did not qualify for the state playoffs in 1999, the first year it fielded a team, but has advanced each year since.
On Monday against Warner Robins, the Lady Packers got goals from Kristin Hall and Alba Hernandez.
Hernandez got the Lady Packers only goal on Tuesday. It was her 18th of the season.
Hall finished with seven goals.
“I’m proud of them,” Jarvis said of his 2007 Lady Packers.
“We’re losing tons of experience, but we’ve got some talented players coming on.”
