Boys soccer team gets a break

The Colquitt County boys soccer team got some good news following its 4-1 victory over Coffee High on Wednesday in Douglas.

In Warner Robins, Region 1-AAAAA leading Houston County was defeated by Warner Robins 2-1, dropping the Bears to 8-2 on the season.

The Packers are 7-2 and now can take over first place in the region with a victory over Houston on the road tonight.

The Bears won their first seven region matches in a row, including a 2-0 victory over the Packers on March 23.

Since then, Houston has dropped two of three, including a 1-0 loss to Tift County on March 27.

The Packers, on the other hand, have won four straight, including three in the region, since their loss to Houston.

The Packers are 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the region. Colquitt’s only other loss was by a 3-2 score to Tift County on March 7.

Of this and that:

n West Georgia spoiled a complete game from Valdosta State starter Thomas Tripp when Wolves defeated the Blazers 5-2 in a Gulf South Conference game at Billy Grant Field last Saturday.

Tripp’s complete game was his second of the season. The sophomore right-hander gave up six hits and five runs, three of which were earned, while striking out 10 as he fell to 2-3 on the season.

n Also on Saturday, Georgia Southern’s Aaron Eubanks scattered three hits in six scoreless innings against Elon, but did not figure in the decision as the Eagles fell 4-3 in 10 innings.

The former Packer walked four and struck out five.

Eubanks is now 1-2 on the season with a 3.38 ERA in 10 appearances, including four starts.

The left-hander has struck out 24 and walked 13 in 26.2 innings.

n Colquitt County’s Jamal Hayes, now competing in track at LSU, turned in a 21.16 in the 200 in the LSU Tiger Classic on March 31.

Hayes also ran on the 4×400 team with Siraj Williams, Melville Rogers and Isa Phillips. The group ran a 3:06.52.

Hayes, who became an All-American as a freshman during the indoor season, also is running on the 4×100, 4×200 and the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team during the outdoor season.

n The Wiregrass Pony Club will hold a mounted meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, at Hancock’s Arena. For more information, contact April Mathis at 891-2563.

n The Abraham Baldwin College women’s tennis team, which features former Lady Packers Lindsay Jacobs and Gracie Qurnell, lost their first seven matches this season, but have rebounded to go 13-3 since then.

The Fillies had won nine of their last 10 matches heading into Thursday’s 2:30 p.m. meeting with Georgia Southwestern in Americus.

The Region XVII tournament will run April 20-21 at ABAC.
