Colquitt sweeps Coffee in soccer

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High boys soccer team did its part in setting up a shot at the Region 1-AAAAA championship by knocking off Coffee High 4-1 on Wednesday in Douglas.

The victory raised the Colquitt County boys overall record to 12-2 and upped their Region 1-AAAAA mark to 7-2.

The Packers will travel to Warner Robins on Friday to take on region-leading Houston County.

The Bears took an 8-1 record into its match with Warner Robins on Wednesday.

Depending on the outcome of Wednesday’s Houston-Warner Robins match, the Packers could take over first place in the region if they beat the Bears by three or more goals on Friday.

“We know what we’ve got to do to be successful,” Packers coach Mell Wier said what asked about Friday’s match.

The Packers scored first on Tyler Dismuke’s first varsity goal, a header on a cross from Trey Brooks.

The Trojans scored later in the first half and the game remained tied until Salvadore Duque scored to put the Packers up 2-1 just 5 minutes into the second half.

It was Duque’s fifth goal of the season. Omar Zapote made it 3-1 with a his fourth goal of the season.

Daniel Garcia finished off the scoring with a goal with about a minute remaining.

Garcia has a team-leading 13 goals, including nine in the last four matches.

“That was one of the better matches we’ve played against them,” Wier said.

The Colquitt County girls also won 4-1.

“We have got to win every single one of them if we are going to have a chance (at the postseason),” said Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis. “That is our motivation. Well, one down, three to go.”

The Lady Packers scored first, just seven minutes into the match on a cross from Alba Hernandez to Sarah Tyndall, who popped it into the net.

The goal was the fourth of the season and third in the last two matches.

With 27:30 left in the first half, Hernandez made it 2-0 with her 16th goal of the season.

Jessie Vick made it 3-0 on a goal six minutes later.

The Lady Packers finished the scoring with 2:30 remaining in the match when Katie Roberts headed the ball to Carly Banks, who scored her sixth varsity goal of the season.

“We missed several other opportunities,” Jarvis said. “But we played a good game all night long. We are really proud of them.”

The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 8-5-1 overall and 4-5 in Region 1-AAAAA.

Colquitt will travel to Houston County on Friday, to Warner Robins next Monday and will finish the regular season against Lowndes on Senior Night on Tuesday, April 17.

Warner Robins, Houston County and Lowndes currently are the top three teams in the Region 1-AAAA standings.

The Lady Packers are battling Tift County and Lowndes for fourth place and spot in the state playoff.

The Colquitt County girls have not failed to make the playoffs since 1999, the first year the school fielded a girls soccer team.

“It’s not impossible,” Jarvis said. “But it won’t be easy.”
