MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school girls soccer team finished its second-straight undefeated, nine-victory season on Saturday by winning the South Georgia Athletic Conference championship.
The Lady Packers defeated Eighth Street Middle School of Tift County 1-0 in their first match on Saturday in the tournament, which was played at the Tift County Optimist Soccer Complex.
Lindsay Causey got the only goal of the match on assist from Lauren Kelshaw in the 16th minute.
And the Lady Packers made it stand up.
“We beat them 6-3 last week and they came after us with a vengeance,” Lady Packers coach Ashley Hill said.
“The second half was a struggle, back and forth. It was a great defensive battle, but our midfield had its A game and our fullbacks were right on the ball once it got in the 18.”
The victory over Tift County sent the Lady Packers to the championship game against Hahira and the Vikettes, who had dropped two matches to Colquitt County already this season, jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 21st minute.
But it didn’t take long for the Lady Packers to get even.
Just two minutes later, Causey scored an unassisted goal to tie the match.
“That really lifted the team,” Colquitt County coach Ashley Hill. “Emotionally, it just lift our team up.”
Lauren Kelshaw got what proved to be the game-winner in the 27th minute, putting Colquitt County up 2-1. It was her ninth goal of the season.
Causey scored her second goal of the match, third of the day and 13th of the season to give the Colquitt County girls some insurance in the 30th minute.
The Lady Packers finish the season with a 9-0-2 record. The girls team was 9-0-3 last season. There was no conference tournament in 2006.
“That’s our first middle school championship ever,” Hill said. “This group has been so solid. I just couldn’t be any prouder of these 23 girls.”
The Colquitt County middle school boys defeated all comers this season except for the Eighth Street Middle School team from Tift County.
The middle school Blue Devils beat the Packers twice: in the regular-season finale, dealing Colquitt its first defeat of the season, and again on Saturday in the semifinals of the South Georgia Athletic Conference tournament in Tifton.
Tift County advanced to the tournament championship after a 3-2 victory.
The Colquitt County goals were scored by Jose Zunun, with an assist from Brett Holden, and by Octavio Carranza, with five minutes left in the match.
The difference was a penalty kick converted by the Blue Devils.
The Colquitt County middle school boys finish the season with an 8-2 record.
