Homers fly in Pony League opener

MOULTRIE — The two games played on Monday in the opening night of Pony League action were hightlighted by three home runs, including a grand slam.
Payne Newsome had the bases loaded homer, but it wasn’t enough as Southwest Georgia Bank fell to Clements Pools 7-5.
Stephen Moore was the winning pitcher for Clements, which got two hits each from Blake Stamps, Daylon Connell and Parker Johnson.
Megan May, Ryan Davis, Zac Goodno and Jimmy Skeen each had two hits for Southwest Georgia Bank.
In Monday’s second game, Ameris defeated VFW 10-6.
Jacob Tompkins was the winning pitcher. Hunter Stone and Tyler Brown backed him up with two hits each. One of Brown’s was a home run.
Hayden Kudela had three hits, including a home run, for VFW. Christopher Johnson and Bryce Giddens each had two hits.
Pony League will be off until Thursday night, when Southwest Georgia Bank meets VFW at 6 p.m. and Quality Employment plays its opener against Clements Pools.
In one of Monday’s two Midget League openers, Ameris defeated Southwest Georgia Bank 7-3.
Caleb Brown went four innings to get the win for Ameris. Matt Gerald and Tyler Clay threw one inning each.
Eli Crosby had two hits for Ameris.
Andrew Carlton and Eric Gould each pitched three innings for Southwest Georgia Bank.
Carlton had two hits.
Cason Wells went four innings and O’Shay Williams the final two in Davis Insurance’s 8-4 victory over Edwards Motors.
Wells and Alex Kimbrell each had two hits for Davis. Cody Parker and Austin Bass each had two hits for Edwards Motors.
In Farm League play on Monday, Lazarus opened the season with a 7-3 victory over Farm Bureau.
Jimmy Johnson and Kevin Hall each had two hits for Lazarus. Ryan Wallace had two hits for Farm Bureau.
In Monday’s other Farm League game, Ameris scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Rocky’s 5-4.
Ryan Pipkin and Hudson May each had two hits for Ameris.
Tyler Pifer, Kyle Ashley, Parker Hoes and Logan Johnson each had two hits for Rocky’s.
In Tiny Mites openers, Baell Mercantile defeated Winn-Dixie 14-8 and Mprints won over Southwest Georgia Bank 6-4.
