MOULTRIE — The big inning continues to haunt the Colquitt County High baseball team.
Two days after giving up eight runs in the top of the eighth inning in a 17-10 loss to Thomas County Central, the Packers gave up eight runs with just one out in the bottom of the fifth inning and took a 12-2 mercy-rule loss to Crisp County in Cordele.
The loss drops the Packers to 6-8 as they prepare to play host to Coffee in Region 1-AAAAA game at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park at 7 p.m. Friday.
Colquitt has lost four of its last five games.
The Packers opened the 2007 season with a 7-4 victory over the Cougars back on Feb. 26 in the first game played at the new field at Packer Park.
But Colquitt has managed to win just five 13 games since then.
Leading 4-2, the Cougars took advantage of four walks and a dropped fly ball to score eight runs in the fifth and end the game via the 10-run rule.
“If we could just eliminate the big inning … that is the one thing that has really hurt us,” Packers assistant coach Will Stuckey said.
And although the fly ball dropped in the twilight hurt, the Packers played sound defense. Of the 12 runs given up, 11 were earned.
“We executed pretty well,” Stuckey said.
But the Packers, who took a .372 team batting average into the game, managed just four hits in the five innings.
Blake Cato, Andrew McDowell, Javaris Jackson and Andrew Wallace each had singles.
Cato was returning to the lineup after missing Saturday’s game. He was involved in a wreck following Friday night’s victory over Warner Robins.
Stuckey said the Crisp County pitcher was not fast.
“He had us off-balance and we never adjusted,” Stuckey said.
The Packers have three days to get ready for Coffee.
The Trojans will take an 0-2 region record into tonight’s game at Houston County. Also tonight, Lowndes will be at Valdosta and Warner Robins will visit Tift County.
