Pack to play for Bainbridge title

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys tennis team won its first two matches in the Bainbridge Invitational on Friday and will play for the tournament championship this morning.

The Lady Packers split their two matches and will face Tift County today with the winner taking third place.

The Packers opened with 5-0 victory over Bainbridge.

At No. 1 singles, Austin York defeated Caymon Fowler, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Blake Jenkins won over Bobby Humphrey 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 3 Shaun Soderstrom defeated Ronnie Alston 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Zach Owen and Chris Harvin defeated Bobby Forrester and Chris Lott 6-2, 6-2.

Barclay Mitchell and Zach Clifton defeated Dillon Fowler and Morrell Epps at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-3.

The Packers also had little trouble Lee County, winning 4-1.

The only loss came at No. 1 singles, where York fell to Matt Vanzant 1-6, 1-6.

At No. 2 singles, Jenkins won over Josh Breeden 6-3, 4-6 and 10-6 in the third set super tie-break.

Soderstrom also won on the super tie-breaker, defeated Robert Reeves 4-6, 6-4 10-1.

The doubles teams breezed.

Owen and Harvin won 6-1, 6-1 and Mitchell and Clifton won 6-0, 6-0.

The Packers will face Thomasville for the tournament championship today.

The Bulldogs advanced to the championship round with a victory over Tift County.

The Lady Packers drew Bainbridge in the first round and lost 2-3.

Against Bainbridge, Colquitt won only at doubles. At No. 1, Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon won 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

At No. 2, Alexa Isaacs and Kate Reeves won over Jordan Pointevinet and McCall Mason 6-3, 6-3.

Lady Packers coach Linda Berl shook up her lineup up for the match against Lee County and came up with a 4-1.

With Cara McCalley ailing, Carli Hester moved up to play No. 1 singles and won over Chelsea Wingfield 7-5, 6-3.

Laura Murphy, who had just 15 minutes rest after a long match in a 3-6, 3-6 loss to Bainbridge’s Kylie McGlincy, had a long three-setter against Melinda Vanzant and fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-10.

Constance Terrell got the start at No. 3 singles and won over Katie Brown 6-1, 6-2.

Harvin and Lamon won easily at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Berl started Meghan Traylor and Jana Harvin and the two responded with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The Lady Packers, who have defeated Tift County twice already this season, will meet the Lady Devils again today to determine third place in the tournament.

After today’s matches in Bainbridge, the Colquitt County tennis teams will return to Region 1-AAAAA action on Tuesday when they travel to meet Coffee High in Douglas. Colquitt swept Coffee on Feb. 27 in Moultrie.
