MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High rifle team did what it was expected to do — win the Area 2 championship on Thursday at Turner County High.

But the Packers did it with a couple of nice touches.

Colquitt produced its highest score of the season — a 1,152 — to leave the rest of the area in the rear view mirror.

Shontae Robinson and Dori Miller each shot a perfect 100 in the prone position. Colquitt County had not previously posted a 100 this year.

And both Robinson and Amanda Thompson broke the 290 barrier: Thompson with a 293 and Robinson with an even 290.

Miller had a season-high 288 and Davis, a freshman, had a 281.

The school’s second area championship in a row will allow the Packers to play host to a Sectional match next week.

Lee County shot a 1,116 to finish a distant second. It, too, will host a Sectional match next week.

Wilcox County, which finished third with a 1,112, and Worth County, which had a 1,066, will go on the road next week.

Colquitt County will learn today which Area 5 school it will host.

“I couldn’t be happier for the kids,” Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant, the team’s coach said. “They’ve put in all kinds of work and it’s paid off.”

Robinson broke the 290 mark for the fifth time this season. She added a 93 in the standing position and a 97 in the kneeling position to her perfect prone score.

Thompson broke the 290 mark for the fourth time this season with a 99 prone, a 97 standing and a 97 kneeling.

Miller broke her previous high score by two points.

Colquitt County’s top four shooters were named to the All-Area team.

Robinson had the highest scoring average in the area, a 287.86. Thompson was second, Davis was third and Miller was fifth.

Josue Marquez was named to the All-Area second team.

Davis, Miller, Marquez and Mary Blake were named to the all-rookie team.

Colquitt County had the top three finishers in the standing position: Thompson, 94.47; Robinson, 93.86; and Davis, 92.71.

Davis finished second in the area in the kneeling position with a 96.57

Robinson was third with a 96.43 and Thompson was fourth with a 95.43.
