MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County baseball team took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning against Lee County on Wednesday in Leesburg before the Trojans finally got their bats warmed up.

Lee County scored seven runs in fifth inning and five more in the sixth to defeat the Packers 13-5.

The game was the first of the season for the Trojans.

The Packers, who opened the 2007 season on Monday with a 7-4 victory over Crisp County, fall to 1-1.

Colquitt scored four runs in the second inning and got a strong four innings of work from starter Andrew McDowell.

The junior left-hander gave up just one one run, a homer.

“He pitched great,” said Packers assistant coach Craig Pitts.

But poor defense bedeviled the two Packer relief pitchers.

Junior Patrick Taylor gave up seven runs in the fifth, although only three were earned.

Clark Coleman suffered much the same fate. The sophomore right-hander gave up five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Only three were earned.

The Packers scored their final run in the top of the seventh when Andrew Wallace tripled and scored on an error.

Lee County is expected to be a state championship contender in Class AAAA this season.

Coached by former Packers assistant Rob Williams, the Trojans have three players who already have signed with Division I schools, including Jack Posey, who will join older brother Buster at Florida State next season.

“We’ve still got a lot of things to work on,” Pitts said. “The mistakes we made are ones we can fix.”

Colquitt County had just six hits. In addition to Wallace’s triple, Blake Cato contributed his second double of the young season and McDowell, John Michael Harrison, Carter Jones and Spenser Richardson each had singles.

McDowell, in addition to his solid outing on the mound on Wednesday, also has four hits in the Packers first two games.

The Packers will be off today and will travel to Athens on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game against Oglethorpe County and a 7 p.m. meeting with Cedar Shoals. Both games will be played at Cedar Shoals High.

Colquitt County will return to Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park on Monday for a 5 p.m. game against Thomas County Central.
