Three named All-Region in basketball

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County placed three players on the All-Region 1-AAAAA basketball teams, including Taquella Coates, selected for the second straight year.
Coates and Lady Packers teammate Nicolle Thomas were named to the All-Region girls second team.
Senior guard Channing Hudson was named to the boys second team.
Region 1-AAAAA boys champion Warner Robins placed three players on the team, including guards Pierre Miller and Kenny Willis, who were named to the first team.
Miller, an outstanding shooter and four-year starter for the Demons, was named the boys Player of the Year.
Chip Malone of Warner Robins was named the boys Coach of the Year.
Tonia Williams, a junior who averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds for Houston County this season, was named the girls Player of the Year.
Shan Garner, who led Lowndes to its first Region 1-AAAAA championship since 2003, was named the girls Coach of the Year.
The Vikettes are now 24-4 after defeating Tri-Cities 50-29 on Friday in a first-round state tournament game.
The Lowndes girls will meet Douglass at 4 p.m. Thursday in a second-round game at Fort Valley State.
Joining the two outstanding Warner Robins guards on the boys first team were Demetrius Williams of Coffee, A.J. Brown of Lowndes and Michael Tippins of Valdosta.
In addition to Hudson, the second team included Jon Nolton and Ryan Stallings of Houston County, Michael Fowler of Tift County and Keith Austin of Lowndes.
Receiving honorable mention were D’Juan Smith and Akeem Wesley of Coffee, Terrell Johnson of Tift County and Xavier Jackson of Warner Robins.
Hudson made the most of his first season as a starter for the Packers, averaging 12.4 points and hitting 50 3-pointers.
Among his most productive games were 27 points against Coffee, 24 against Lowndes, 21 against Valdosta, 19 against Houston County and 18 against Warner Robins.
In the Region 1-AAAAA tournament, he scored 12 in the victory over Valdosta and he finished off his high school career with 19 when the Packers were eliminated by Coffee.
As the quarterback of the Colquitt County football team, Hudson was a first-team All-Region pick last fall.
Williams was joined on the girls first team by Cherie White of Warner Robins, Lindsay Welker of Tift County, Shan Green of Coffee and Taccara Bivins of Lowndes.
Along with Coates and Thomas on the second team are Shanavier Walker of Valdosta, Jacquayla Berry of Coffee and Stephanie Sermons of Lowndes.
Receiving honorable mention were Kittery Maine of Warner Robins, Kia Tillman of Lowndes and Brittany Torain of Houston County.
Both of the Colquitt County girls are underclassmen.
Coates, a junior, averaged 9.9 points and 6.3 rebounds when named to the All-Region second team last year and was much improved this season.
The 6-foot post player averaged 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds. She scored 20 or more points five times and had 26 against Tift County, and 20 against Houston County and Valdosta in Region 1-AAAAA games.
Thomas, a 5-11 guard, is just a sophomore.
She connected on 101 2-pointers, 37 3-pointers and hit 53 of her 80 free throws.
She had four games of 20 or more points, including three against region opponents: 27 against Warner Robins, 23 against Houston County and 25 against Valdosta.
The All-Region teams are selected by the representatives of the newspapers who cover the league’s basketball.
