MOULTRIE — With the Region 1-AAAAA opener looming on Tuesday at Lowndes, the Colquitt County boys soccer team wanted to continue building momentum when it traveled to Waycross on Saturday to meet Ware County.
And that just what the Packers did, defeating the Gators 3-1 to raise their record to 3-0.
The Packers led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Daniel Garcia, his third of the season. Matt DeMott and Oscar Quintanilla added goals in the second half to put the Packers up 3-0 before Ware scored on a penalty kick with about a minute remaining.
Garcia assisted on the Quintanilla goal. Quintanilla assisted on Garcia’s.
DeMott also has three goals on the season. Quintanilla’s goal was his second.
Packers co-head coach Mell Wier likes what he has seen of his team.
“I think we should go into every match now with a chance to win,” Wier said.
Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis was not nearly as happy as Wier after his girls let a 2-0 halftime lead slip away into a 2-2 tie.
“We just didn’t show up,” said Jarvis, whose team will take a 2-0-1 record to Lowndes on Tuesday.
Kristin Hall gave the Lady Packers a 1-0 lead on a long, high shot over the keeper’s head in the 22nd minute.
Hall set up the Lady Packers second score when the Ware County keeper stopped one of her shots, only to have it land at her feet, where the Colquitt County’s Alex Smith punched it in the net.
But Ware County scored its first goal with 14:43 left in the match and tied it with 4:46 remaining.
“I don’t know if we were overconfident or we just ran out of gas,” Jarvis said, comparing the game to the one against Lee County on Tuesday in which the Lady Packers had a 4-1 lead, but had to hold on to get the 4-3 victory. “We played extremely well defensively in the first half.
“But when you’re up 2-0, there’s no reason to give up two goals. We worked really, really hard to give up a lead tonight.”
The Lady Packers played without two starters — Abbey Taylor, who has an injured knee, and Brianna Campbell, who was on a college trip.
Starters Alba Hernandez and Jessica Vick were limping with leg injuries.
