MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity soccer teams kicked off their seasons on Monday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium and split a pair of matches with Lowndes High.
The Lady Packers fell 3-2, but the Packers got their season off on the right foot with a 2-1 victory.
The Colquitt County junior varsity boys jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Josue Mundo, but Lowndes answered to tie the game.
Yasmani Santiesban then scored the go-ahead goal late in the first half and the Packers were able to make it stand up.
“It was a well-played game,” said first-year coach Steve Harp. “The teams were evenly matched.”
But Colquitt County had a bit more offense, sending 12 shots on goal. Lowndes had just seven.
Harp said he was especially pleased with the play of Nic Price and goal-keeper Derek Illian.
The Packers had just four days of tryouts and five days of practice before the game.
“But I saw a lot of positives out there today,” Harp said.
The Colquitt County boys team includes Buster Elkins, Weston Gittens, Nic Price, Bryan Tovar, Gustavo Zapote, Giovanni Rodriquez, Alex Ramirez, Jose Carranza, Carlos Charles, Josue Mundo, Heath Lamb, Yasmani Santiesban, Rafael Luna, Josh Cotton, Tyler Dismuke, Saul Garcia, Thomas Griffin, Derek Illian, Jacorey Dillard and Donovan McGowan.
The Colquitt Couny junior varsity girls have a largely inexperienced team and fell behind 2-0 before a Carley Banks goal pulled the Lady Packers to within one.
A goal that started with a Colquitt County corner kick andbounced off a Lowndes player and into the net tied the game.
But with about five minutes remaining, the Vikettes split the Colquitt County defense and scored what proved to be the winning goal.
The Lady Packers just just over a week to get ready for their opener, but coach Andy Chapura was pleased with what he saw.
“We’ve a got a lot of young girls, but they played pretty well against a good Lowndes team,” Chapura said. “All but about five are brand new.
“But I was proud of the way our girls played.”
Chapura said sweeper Morgan Hayes played an outstanding defensive game and Katie Roberts was strong in the net.
The rest of the junior varsity girls team includes Amy Taylor, Margarita Moreno, Dulce De La Cruz, Hannah Adair, Whitlee Cox, Hannah Vereen, Lorianna Weathers, Karla Duque, Briseida Hernandez, Clary Zunun, Christi Taylor, Chelsey Moffet, Angela Moxley, Kelsey Cooper and Marla Medina.
The junior varsity teams will be back at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium today to face Lee County.
The girls game will start at 5 p.m. The boys game will start about 7 p.m.
The junior varsity Packers and Lady Packers also will be home to meet Tift County beginning at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19.
