MOULTRIE — Fifteen Colquitt County High senior basketball players and cheerleaders will make their final appearances at the Gladys Espy Memorial Gymnasium tonight when Bainbridge visits and will try to help the Packers build some momentum for next week’s Region 1-AAAAA tournament.

And with victories tonight both the Lady Packers and Packers can take two-game winning streaks into the postseason.

Colquitt has not played since Friday, Feb. 2, when the two teams swept Warner Robins at home.

Neither team can improve its region tournament berth tonight, but would like to carry a victory into the postseason.

The Lady Packers are 13-12 overall and have won four of their last five.

They will be out to avenge a two-month old loss to the Lady Bearcats.

The Bainbridge girls won 44-43 when the two teams met at the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum on Dec. 12.

The Lady Cats took a 19-4 record into Friday’s Region 1-AAAA meeting with Lee County.

The Lady Packers will have just one senior, but Nikki Hudson has been an outstanding contributor for the Colquitt County girls for the last four seasons.

She was a starter on last year’s team that went 21-10, advanced to the state quarterfinals and finished ranked No. 6 in the state.

Hudson is averaging 7.4 points this season and has scored in double-figures in two of the last four games.

The Lady Packers are led in scoring by a pair of underclassmen.

Sophomore Nicolle Thomas is averaging 13.7 points a game and junior Taquella Coates is averaging 13.6.

Thomas has scored 20 or more points four times this season and is coming off a career-high 27 points in the Lady Packers victory over Warner Robins.

Coates has scored 20 or more five times and is averaging 16.7 points in her last six games.

The Colquitt County boys will be going after their first two-game winning streak since Dec. 30-Jan. 2.

The Packers would like to duplicate their first outing of the season against the Bearcats, a 55-51 road victory on Dec. 12.

Coach Rickey McCullough’s Bainbridge boys took a 12-11 record into Friday night’s meeting with Lee County.

The Bearcats are led by Brian Bowen, last year’s Region 1-AAAA Player of the Year, and Chris Watson.

Watson had 17 points, Bowen had 16 and Tamorris Baulkman had 10 for the Bearcats in Tuesday’s 76-63 victory over Thomas County Central.

The Packers feature nine seniors: Orion Ponder, Channing Hudson, Rashawn Melvin, Javaris Jackson, Nolan Whyte, Duke Banks, Dannie Hunt, Andrew Wallace and Josh Cotton.

The Packers have three starters, all seniors, averaging in double-figures.

Despite missing eight games, Melvin is the Packers leading scorer, averaging 12.9 points.

Over his last four games, his average is 16.5 points. He scored 16 points in the victory over Warner Robins last week.

Channing Hudson is averaging 12.1 points, and four times has scored 20 or more points. He has a high of 27 against Coffee on Jan. 6, and also scored 24 against Lowndes on Jan. 16.

The hottest Packer now is 6-foot-5 center Andrew Wallace.

The four-year starter has scored 66 points in his last three games to get his average up to 10.3 points a game.

Hunt is coming off his best outing of the season, a 12-point effort against Warner Robins.

The five senior cheerleaders who will be honored tonight are Tora Jenkins, Shanda Best, Jasmine Jones, Darnecia King and Hannah Boyd.

Tonight is the final night of regular-season Region 1-AAAAA games. The schedule features Tift County at Lowndes and Coffee at Valdosta.
