Mat Hawgs get three fourth-places

MOULTRIE — Five members of the recently formed Mat Hawgs wrestling club took part in the Flint River Classic in Leesburg and brought home three fourth-place medals.

Tucker Hathcock, 50 pounds, was fourth in the peewee division; Hayes Sumner, 45 pounds, in the bantam division; and George Zeanah, 65, pounds, in the 65-pound bantam division.

Also representing the Mat Hawgs were Hart Sumner, 75 pounds, in the Midget division, and Charlie Zeanah, 80 pounds, in Midget division, did not place. The sixth member of the team, Mack Hathcock, was in Atlanta with the Colquitt County Special Olympics floor hockey team and did not compete.

“I’m real proud of them,” coach Kevin Sumner said. “They were ready and they all wrestled well. We’ve still got work to do.

“But for their first tournament, they were nervous, but excited. The boys are fired up. They got over their fear of their first competition. They realize the work it takes to be successful.”

The USA Wrestling tournament drew 258 young wrestlers.

The team will compete next on Feb. 17 at Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany.

Sumner said he would take the team the following weekend to Dublin for a state qualifier.
