MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls basketball game would like a to take a fourth-place seed into the Region 1-AAAAA tournament, scheduled to begin Feb. 14, but will need a little help to do it.
And the Lady Packers will have do a little for themselves as well.
Colquitt County’s girls are 5-6 in the region following Tuesday’s 45-40 loss at Lowndes and must meet Warner Robins at home tonight in their final region game of the season.
The Demonettes will offer a challenge. They are 6-2 in the region and were recently ranked No. 10 in the state in Class AAAA.
The Warner Robins girls own a 46-44 home victory over the Lady Packers and will be battling for a chance at the regular-season championship when they arrive today.
Warner Robins also will be smarting from a 68-64 loss to Lowndes on Saturday. The Demonettes had defeated the Vikettes the night before 51-49.
But if the Lady Packers can return to the form they displayed in last week’s three-game region win streak, they will have a chance at a victory and a 6-6 region record.
They are unlikey to catch Houston County, 7-2 in the region, or Lowndes or Warner Robins, each 6-2.
But Colquitt has kept Coffee in its sights.
The Lady Trojans are 4-4 and have four region games remaining, beginning with a home meeting against 2-6 and slumping Tift County tonight.
Coffee’s girls also must go to Lowndes on Tuesday before finishing up at home against Warner Robins on Friday, Feb. 9 and against Valdosta the following night.
Lady Packers coach Joe Parker said he expects to play Coffee in a first-round tournament game, regardless of how his team does tonight.
But the shot at the No. 4 spot and a chance to go into the tournament off a region win should provide some incentive.
And Parker and his team would like to even the score with the Demonettes.
The Lady Packers led much of the game in Warner Robins, before a late run did them in.
“We gave it to them,” Parker said. “We led at the half by eight and were up by four or five with a minute-and-a half left. We had a chance to win.”
The Lady Packers, now 12-12 overall, will continue to try to get the ball inside to Taquella Coates. Parker said the Demonettes will play behind his junior post player.
Parker said the key to his team’s success will be “to take care of the ball in pressure. We need to break their pressure.”
Parker was impressed with how Warner Robins mixed up its defenses in the first meeting between the two teams.
“That kept my young kids off-balance,” Parker said. “They are a well-coached group.”
The Colquitt County boys will be seeking their second region win of the season.
After getting their first region win of the season last Friday, the Packers have lost to Valdosta and Lowndes.
On Tuesday they lost for the second team this season to the Vikings by just one point.
The Packers, who are 8-15 overall, are likely to be involved in a region tournament play-in game, with the No. 6 and Nol. 7 teams facing off.
Three teams — Coffee, Lowndes and Valdosta — are tied at 4-4 and just ahead of the Packers in the standings.
Following tonight’s games, Colquitt County will close out its regular-season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 10, at home against Bainbridge.
