MOULTRIE —First-year rifle team member Caitlin Davis shot a 292 — just one point off the school record — to lead Colquitt County to a 1,148-1,110 victory over visiting Wilcox County on Tuesday.
The victory lifts the defending state runner-up Packers to 2-0 on the season. And it came against the team that the team’s coach, Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant, said he believes is the other team to beat in Area 2.
Wilcox had shot a 1,143 in its opener, but several of its shooters were under the weather on Tuesday, Bryant said, adding he expects to have to beat Wilcox again in the area match at the end of the season.
But Bryant was pleased with his team’s performance on Tuesday, which followed a 1,145-1,090 victory over Crisp County in the season-opener.
Veteran Amanda Thompson turned in a 286 and Shontae Robinson and Dori Miller, another first-year shooter, each had a 285.
And the Packers scratched two scores that some schools would be pleased to post when a 276 shot by both Deddrick Head and Karin Mirales were not counted.
But it was the 292 by Davis, a freshman, that was the eye-opener. She bettered her season-opening score of 287 by five points and now is qualified for the state tournament.
The school record is 293.
“I foresee her being one of the top shooters in the state,” Bryant said.
Davis had a 99 in both the prone and the kneeling positions and a 94 in the standing position.
Miller equaled her season-opening 285 by shooting a 97 prone, a 96 kneeling and a 92 standing.
“I’m willing to venture she will be shooting in the 290s before the season is over,” Bryant said of Miller.
Thompson and Robinson are both familiar with 290, the state-qualifying score.
Thompson had a 290 against Crisp on Jan. 18, and although she was down four points on Tuesday, she still managed a 96 in the prone position and a 95 in both the standing and kneeling positions.
Robinson is one of the Colquitt County High record-holders with the 293 she shot against Westover at home last year.
On Tuesday, she had a 96 in both the prone and kneeling positions and a 93 standing.
Although his scores did not count, Head did not have a score under 90, posting a 95 prone, a 91 kneeling and a 90 standing.
Mirales had a 96 prone, a 91 kneeling and an 89 standing.
Wilcox County was led by Jennifer Holliday, who had a 280.
“I’m just blown away,” Bryant said by the early-season performance of his team, which has only two veterans, Robinson and Thompson. “It’s really been a team effort. They are really standing up to the task.
“If we can get the kids to stay focused, we’ll be all right. We’re shooting at the level of the north Georgia schools.”
Colquitt County will travel to Ashburn to shoot against Turner County on Thursday.
The team also is preparing for the Junior ROTC Eastern Championships, which will be held Feb. 15-17, at Fort Benning.
