MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys basketball team dropped its second one-point decision of the season to Lowndes on Tuesday, falling 63-62 at the Charles Cooper Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Packers 8-15 overall and 1-10 in the region.

When the two teams met on Jan. 16 in Moultrie, the Vikings came away with a 67-66 victory.

Lowndes is now 4-4 in the Region 1-AAAAA standings.

In a key region boys game in Tifton on Tuesday, Tift County defeated Warner Robins 54-53.

The Blue Devils and Demons are now tied atop the region standings with 6-2 records.

The Colquitt County boys close out their region schedule at home on Friday when they play host to Warner Robins.

The result of the boys game between Houston County (4-4) and Coffee (4-3) in Douglas was unavailable at press time.

The Colquitt County girls took a three-game winning streak into their meeting with the Vikettes on Tuesday, but poor shooting cost them in a 45-40 defeat.

It was the lowest point total for the Lady Packers since falling to Westover 50-36 on Dec. 30 in the Colquitt County Roundball Classic.

“They played us a soft man and that hurt us,” Lady Packers coach Joe Parker said. “But we just couldn’t stick it in the basket.

“We had good shots, we just couldn’t knock them down.”

Taquella Coates and Nicolle Thomas, the Lady Packers leading scorers, were held to eight and six points respectively.

Both were averaging over 13 points a game and Coates had averaged 22 points in Colquitt County’s victories over Tift County, Houston County and Valdosta last week.

Parker said Lowndes double-teamed Coates, who was just 3-for-13 from the floor.

Thomas got in early foul trouble and never was able to get going.

Nikki Hudson led the Lady Packers with 15 points.

“She played real well,” Parker said of his senior point guard.

Tiffany Troupe had eight.

“We’ve got to get some other people involved,” Parker said.

Colquitt had a 48-32 advantage in rebounds, but it was negated by the poor shooting.

Hudson got her double-double by adding 11 rebounds.

Coates had 13 boards and Thomas and Troupe each had 10.

The game was tied 19-19 at the half. Lowndes took a 30-28 lead into the final quarter and built on it down the stretch.

The Lowndes girls climb to 6-2 in the region.

The Lady Packers fall to 12-12 overall and 5-6 in the region. On Friday, Colquitt County will play host to Warner Robins at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.

The Warner Robins girls are ranked No. 10 in Class AAAAA in the most recent Georgia Sports Writers Association poll and are coming off a 54-39 victory over Tift County in Tifton on Tuesday.

The Demonettes are tied with the Vikettes atop the Region 1-AAAAA girls standings, also with a 6-2 record.

Houston County’s girls took a 6-2 record into its game with 4-3 Coffee on Tuesday. Tift County’s girls fell to 2-6 on Tuesday.
