Pack wrestlers fall short

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County had none of its wrestlers place at the Wildcat Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Valdosta High.

“Jacorey Dillard and Dillon Underwood had a decent tournament,” Packers coach Greg Tillery said. “I was very disappointed in several weight classes.”

Dillard and Underwood each went 3-2 in the tournament. Defending Region 1-AAAAA champion Antonio Sutton was 2-2.

Also getting victories in the tournament were Nathan Fowler, Shawn Jiminez, Justin Jones and Ricky Grier, each of whom went 1-2.

“We have got to step it up or the rest of the season is going to be very long,” Tillery said. “I do expect them to turn things around headed into the last half of the season.”

Union Grove won four individual championships and took the first-place trophy in the tournament. Camden County was second, followed by Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.). Valdosta and Cook tied for fourth place. Benedictine was sixth, followed by Tift County, Lowndes, Glynn Academy and Woodward Academy.

The Packers will play host to the region duals tournament at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium on Saturday. All seven region teams will compete.

MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLERS WIN

The Colquitt County middle school wrestling team defeated Bainbridge 58-18 on Saturday in Bainbridge.

Bryce Giddens and Richard Kinsey each were 2-0 in the meet with a two pins. Jacob Hall also was 2-0, with a pin and a technical decision.

Jay Jones, Blake Powell and Coty Thomas also won with pins. Patrick Melton won by technical decision.

The middle school team will face Valdosta and Ben Hill at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Pineland gymnasium.

JV Lady Packers fall

The Colquitt County junior varsity girls basketball team fell to Coffee High 50-32 on Saturday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.

Persephone Taylor led Colquitt County with eight points. Andrianna Barber, Umeika Henry and Kinyama Moore had six. Lori Sherling and Yuanna Thomas each had two points.

The junior varsity Lady Packers will will play next on Friday against Tift County in Tifton.

Ninth-graders fall

The Colquitt County ninth-grade boys basketball team fell to Thomas County Central 56-43 on Monday in Thomasville.

Colquitt was led by Dominique Pressley, who had 13 points. Jeremy Downs had eight, Nathaniel Hill had five, Lawhe Wingfield added four, Amel Magwood, Tamaric Greer and Cameron Erving each had three and Derrell Ward and Quin Roberson had two. The 4-4 freshman will play next on Jan. 18 at Tift County.

CCHS divers perform well in Invitational

MOULTRIE — The members of the Colquitt County High diving team continued to prepare for next month’s state meet with solid performances in the Packer Invitational Swimming and Diving Meet held Saturday at the Darton College pool in Albany.

Two-time defending state champion Ryan Helms scored a 477.35. Teammate Owen Blank had a 414.10. Jacob Russell had a 388.55.

Freshman Henry Norman had a 238.90.

Four members of the Colquitt County girls team had scores of 400 or better.

Senior Hannah Moore had a 424.35; Kelsey Goodman, a 422.10; Anna Aguero, a 404.70; and Ann Perry Blank, a 400.90.

Ali Lepech turned in a 389.55 and Erin Goodman had a 311.95. Maddie Qurnell was sick and unable to compete on Saturday.

All seven of Colquitt County’s girls divers and Helms, Owen Blank and Russell already have state meet-qualifying scores.

Only four of the seven members of the girls team will be able to compete at the state meet.

The Colquitt County divers will compete next at the North Georgia Regional, to be held on Jan. 20, in Dalton.

The results of the swimming portion of the meet were not available at press time.
