MOULTRIE — Just one night after losing their Region 1-AAAAA opener by one point to Houston County on three free throws with one second remaining, the Colquitt County High boys basketball team lost another tight game on Saturday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium, falling to Coffee 58-55.
The Packers, who fall to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the region, had pulled to within one on a 3-pointer by Orion Ponder with 17.9 seconds remaining.
But the Trojans made two free throws with 14.2 seconds left and the Packer misfired on a pair of 3-point attempts in the waning seconds.
The Packers were led by Channing Hudson, who had a career-high 27 points that included seven 3-pointers.
Ponder, who had missed three straight games with a sore back, came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Packers rallied 10-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Also for the Packers, Andrew Wallace had seven points, Duke Banks had eight, Ponder had six, Eugene Woods had four and Dannie Hunt added three.
The Packers outscored the Trojans 16-11 in the second quarter to pull to within a basket at 29-27 at the half.
Coffee raised its overall record to 11-1 and is 1-0 in the region.
The Colquitt County girls scored just two points and turned the ball over 10 in a horrendous third quarter, squandering six-point lead and eventually falling to Coffee High 50-46.
The loss was the second in a row to open Region 1-AAAAA play for the Lady Packers, who fell 60-46 at Houston County on Friday.
Colquitt led 28-13 with 3:23 left in the second quarter before the Lady Trojans went on a 14-5 run to close out the first half.
Coffee then outscored Colquitt County 17-2 in the third quarter.
The Lady Packers made a valiant fourth-quarter run, cutting their deficit to 48-45 on a Taquella Coates layup with 16 seconds remaining.
But the Lady Packers could not score again and Coffee’s Troyanna Vickers stuck in a putback with five seconds left for the final four-point margin of victory.
Coates tried to get the Lady Packers back in the game, scoring nine of her team-high 16 points in the final 5:45.
But the Lady Packers inability to handle the Coffee press led them to find themselves down by nine heading into the final quarter at home. Colquitt turned the ball over 28 times.
Jaquayla Berry had 15 points for Coffee, now 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the region.
Nicolle Thomas added 13 points for the Lady Packers. Tiffany Troupe had 10, including eight in the first quarter when Colquitt jumped out to an 18-10 lead.
Coates had 10 rebounds, including five in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Packers are now 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the region.
Colquitt County will be back in action on Tuesday when the Packers and Lady Packers travel to Valdosta High.
