MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High wrestling team returned heavy from the holiday break and it showed in its split of a pair of matches with Lee County and Berrien on Tuesday at the Pineland gymnasium.

Colquitt had to give up forfeits in several weight classes that it normally has wrestlers in and was thumped by Lee County 71-12.

The Packers defeated Berrien 54-29, but took advantage of forfeits in eight weight classes to get the victory.

The Packers will try to regroup when it takes part in the Wildcat Invitational at Valdosta High this weekend.

The tournament, which includes 26 teams, will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday and continue at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Against Lee County on Tuesday, the Packers got a pin from Nathan Fowler at 112 and another from Antonio Sutton at 275 for their only points of the match. Against Berrien, the only points other than those coming via forfeits were from a pin by Sutton.

The Packers did win a pair of junior varsity matches.

Freshman Heath Lamb won his first match, taking a decision in overtime.

“I was real pleased with how he wrestled,” Colquitt County coach Greg Tillery said.

First-year wrestler Ricky Grier also competed in a junior varsity match and came away with a 2-1 decision.

Sophomore heavyweight R.J. Taylor got into his first match of the season and it was again the Lee County varsity wrestler at 275.

And although Taylor was pinned, Tillery was pleased with the effort.

“He’s done a good job for us,” Tillery said.
