MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls appeared to sleepwalk through the first two quarters of their meeting with South Miami on Friday on the second day of the Colquitt County Roundball Classic at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.
Despite rolling up 70 points in a victory over Boyd Anderson the night before, the Lady Packers scored just four points in the first quarter on Saturday and trailed 21-16 at the half.
But Colquitt exploded for 45 second-half points and blew past the Lady Cobras 61-45.
The Lady Packers will take a 2-0 tournament record into tonight’s 6:30 meeting with Westover, also 2-0 in the tournament.
The Colquitt County boys were unable to make it a sweep when they fell to South Miami 62-56 in the final game of the second day of the tournament.
Colquitt County’s girls missed a number of layups and other shots from close range in the first half, when they trailed by as many as 10 points.
“When you miss wide open layups, that’s just lack of focus,” Lady Packers coach Joe Parker said.
“And we must stop playing in spurts and play at our level, no matter what the competition is. We can’t be out there resting. That can’t happen.”
Colquitt outscored South Miami 24-13 in the third quarter and took the lead for good on a basket by Taquella Coates with 3:03 left in the period.
Coates went on to lead all scorers with 21 points. She also contributed 13 rebounds.
Nicolle Thomas added 13 points. Ashley Patillo had eight, Nikki Hudson had seven, Shay Lovett and Tiffany Troupe each added four and Tiffany McBride had two points.
Troupe and Patillo each had six rebounds. Hudson and Thomas each had five.
Colquitt’s girls hit 11-of-13 free throws and turned the ball over just 15 times.
“Anything under 20 is good,” Parker said.
The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 6-4 and keeps the Colquitt County girls undefeated at the Espy Gymnasium this season.
Parker expected a much bigger challenge from Westover tonight
“They’ve got three girls we are going to have to defend,” he said.
Colquitt County’s boys lost starting point guard Orion Ponder 4 1/2 minutes into their game against the Cobras when he fell and injured his back.
And when leading scorer Rashawn Melvin fouled out just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Packers did not have experience or firepower down the stretch.
The game was tied 12 times in the first three quarters, but when South Miami’s Townshend Powell hit a 3-pointer to put his team up 46-43 with 1:35 left in the third quarter, the Cobras were ahead to stay.
South Miami tried to pull away in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer by Channing Hudson with 24 seconds left in the game pulled the Packers to within two at 58-56.
But the Cobras hit four free throws in the final 21 seconds to win by six.
The Packers fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the tournament. They meet Westover at 8 tonight in the final game of the tournament.
Andrew Wallace led the Packers with 20 points. Melvin had 13.
Dannie Hunt chipped in nine, Nolan Whyte had six, Hudson had five, all in the Hudson had five, all in the fourth quarter, and Nick West had three.
Townshend Powell led South Miami with 14 points. Carl Ballard added 12 and Isiah Brown had 10.
The South Miami boys will take a 2-0 tournament record into its meeting with the Washington County boys at 2 p.m. today.
Also on Friday, the Washington County girls got 24 points from Shakima Wiggins and 12 from Kiara Smith in a 69-48 victory over Albany High.
The Lady Hawks have split their two tournament games. The Squaws are 0-2.
Dougherty’s girls won their second-straight game in the tournament on Friday defeating Boyd Anderson 57-56.
Adrienne Alls had 20 and Tiffany Anderson 17 for Dougherty. Melissa Wilson had 21, Dorothy Robinson 15 and Mercedes Martin 10 for Boyd Anderson.
The Boyd Anderson boys, who defeated Colquitt County 67-48 on Friday, won over Washingon County 65-62 on Friday.

Corey Lester had 14, Jamarie Brown had 12 and Marvin Harris had 10 for Washington County.
In the other girls game, Westover won over Lee County 46-28. Kendra Berry had 18 and Tia Mallard scored 12 for Westover.
Also on Friday, the Jeff Davis boys won their second game in the tournament, defeating Westover 70-53.
Courtney Fortson led the defending Alabama 6-A state champion Volunteers with 19 points. Varez Ward added 15 and Charvez Davis had 11.
