MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County girls basketball team went into its own Roundball Classic looking for some offense and found it in a 70-46 victory over Boyd Anderson High of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.
The Lady Packers, who had lost four of their last five games, scored 21 points in both the first and last quarters and had all five starters in double-figures to knock off the Lady Cobras.
Boyd Anderson was playing its second game of the day, having opened the tournament with a 57-43 victory over Albany High.
The Lady Packers were able to raise their record to 5-4 with the victory.
Colquitt scored the game’s first six points and led 13-1 before the Lady Cobras managed their first basket.
The Lady Packers led 21-10 after the first quarter, but Boyd Anderson rallied in the second to cut their deficit to seven at the half.
After the Lady Cobras scored the first five points of the third quarter to cut Colquitt County’s lead to two, Lady Packers coach Joe Parker called a timeout.
From that point, Colquitt County outscored Boyd Anderson 39-17 the rest of the way.
The Lady Packers dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Cobras 42-25.
Sophomore Nicolle Thomas led Colquitt County with 17 points.
Taquella Coates followed with 15, Nikki Hudson had 13, Tiffany Troupe had 11 and Shay Lovett scored 10.
Carly Moore hit a pair of jumpers for the Lady Packers other four points.
Glenisha Coleman and Dorothy Robinson each had 11 points to lead Boyd Anderson.
In other games in the first day of the tournament, defending Alabama 6-A state champion Jeff Davis held off Washington County for a 66-60 victory in the first boys game of the tournament.
Washington County pulled to within three points in the final minute and had a 3-point opportunity for a tie with 14 seconds left.
When the 3-point attempt failed, the Volunteers made three free throws in the closing seconds.
Jeff Davis, of Montgomery, Ala., pulled off a rare double state championship last year, with both their girls and boys teams claiming titles. The girls went 34-3. The boys were 34-2.
Although the boys team lost three outstanding starters from the state championship team, the Volunteers are off to a 12-2 start this season, said coach Terry Posey, who praised the effort of the Golden Hawks.
“They played well,” Posey said. “They’ve got some nice-looking kids. They gave us fits. They are well-coached.”
Posey said the Volunteers will go into their region schedule when they return to school next week and was pleased to be able to play in a tournament just 3 1/2 hours from home.
“I love this format,” he said. “It’s different from the usual elimination tournament. But we heard there would be some south Florida teams here and some other good teams we wanted to get some games to play during the holiday. Teams like this will just make us better.”
Courtney Fortson led the Volunteers with 22 points. Varez Ware added 12. Marvin Harris had 16 for Washington County.
Jeff Davis will play Westover High of Albany at 6:30 tonight and will conclude tournament play with a game against Boyd Anderson of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Posey said the Jeff Davis girls, who have just one loss so far this season, are playing in a tournament in Birmingham, Ala., this week.
Also on Thursday, the Boyd Anderson girls opened the tournament with a 51-43 victory over Albany. Dorothy Robinson had 21, Melissa Wilson had 16 and Glenesha Coleman had 10 for Boyd Anderson.
The Lady Cobras were filling in a spot in bracket left vacant when Suwannee High did not participate.
Lee County will fill in for Suwannee by meeting Westover’s girls at 3:30 p.m. today and Boyd Anderson at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
In another change to Saturday’s schedule, Dougherty’s girls will meet Washington County, instead of Suwannee, at 11 a.m.
In Thursday’s second game, Westover’s Lady Patriots defeated the Washington County girls 58-48. For Westover, Kendra Berry had 18, Dominique Bryant had 16 and Tia Mallard had 13 points.
Shankima Wiggins had 12 and Kiara Smith had 10 for the Lady Hawks.
Dougherty High’s girls won their tournament opener, defeating South Miami 54-39. Tiffany Anderson had 13 points for Dougherty.
South Miami’s boys defeated Westover 66-51 behind Carl Ballard’s 20 points.
Michael Baptiste added 12 and Isaiah Brown and Isaac Brown each had 12 for South Miami. Dominique Polite had 10 points for Westover.
The Colquitt County boys lost their tournament-opener, falling 67-48 to the Boyd Anderson boys.
The Packers fall to 4-4. Boyd Anderson, coached by former Packer Eugene Richardson and ranked No. 11 in Class 6A in Florida, is now 12-2.
