MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school wrestling team wrapped up the pre-holiday break part of its schedule on Saturday in the Tomcat Invitational at Valdosta Middle School and had two weight-class champions.
Bowen Aguero won both of his matches to take first place in the 65-pound class.
And Bryce Giddens also went 2-0 to win the 215-pound class.
Colquitt County also had two weight-class runners-up.
Anderson Glenn finished 2-1 to finish second at 72 pounds.
Zach Cannon also went 2-1 and was second at 205. Cannon’s loss was his first of the season.
Jesse Goff finished 4-2 at the tournament, but did not place in the top two.
Mid-dle school wrestl-ing coach Travis Torbert said his team performed well in the lower and the higher weight classes, but struggled in those classes in the middle.
“I thought we did real well,” Torbert said.
The middle school Packers finished sixth among the 11 teams that took part in the tournament.
Host Valdosta Middle School finished first, with Cairo placing second.
Lowndes was third, followed by Fitzgerald and Coffee.
Richard Kinsey, Chris Doyle, Coty Thomas, Kevin Lemire, Jay Jones, Tay Spivey and Coleman Neal each went 2-2 in the tournament.
John Peterson, Blake Thompson and Travis Register each went 1-2.
Torbert said Register had one of the meet’s biggest victories, when, behind in points, he got a reverse and pinned his Valdosta Middle School opponent who was a favorite to win the weight class.
“He wrestles with a lot of heart,” Torbert said of Register.
The middle school wrestlers will be off until Saturday, Jan. 6, when they will travel to Bainbridge for a 9 a.m. match.
