MOULTRIE — A 5-year-old boy was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center after he was attacked by a pit bulldog Sunday evening.

A hospital spokesperson said NyRicky Nelson was admitted to Colquitt Regional after the attack. His condition was not available as of press time.

The dog’s owner, Clarence Collins, said Nelson and Collins’ daughter were playing at his house on Summer Circle at 5:02 p.m. Sunday. They went around to the back of the house, where the dogs were kept, and a witness stated the pit bull broke his chain and attacked Nelson, police reports said.

The witness told officers he came to the yard when Collins’ daughter began yelling for help, and he pulled the dog off Nelson and put it into a pen. He then took Nelson to his father before he was taken to Colquitt Regional for treatment.

When the officer went to Colquitt Regional, he spoke with a witness who stated Nelson had 24 puncture wounds to his head and face, including four large bite marks to his head. He also had two lacerations to his nose and chin, 14 puncture wounds to his right arm and hand, one puncture wound on his left hand and red marks on his chest.

The Humane Society of Colquitt County was called to the scene, and they took the female pit bull, named Cinnamon, to the Humane Society. It will be kept there for 10 days after the attack, and rabies tests were administered on the dog.
