MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High wrestling team lost five matches in a row early in its meet with Bainbridge on Tuesday at the Pineland gymnasium and could not recover, falling to the Bearcats 45-30.

Coach Greg Tillery said each match would be a learning process for his young and inexperienced team.

“I looked down and we had five freshmen wrestling on the varsity tonight,” Tillery said. “And three sophomores. So eight of our 13 were either freshmen or sophomores.

“That’s not an excuse. That’s just the way it is. We’ve just got to keep working.”

The Packers will practice today and Thursday to prepare for the Hornet Classic in Adel, which will be held on Friday and Saturday.

“We’re going to work and hope we can have some guys go deep into Saturday,” Tillery said.

The Packers gave up six points quickly with a forfeit at 103.

But that loss was negated when senior Nathan Fowler won by forfeit at 112.

Then the slide started.

At 119, Heath Lamb lost via pin in the first period.

At 125, Jocory Dillard lost a 7-6 decision.

“That was a hard one to swallow,” Tillery said.

Clarence Drew also lost a decision at 130, falling 19-8. At 135, Zacorey Weaver lost for the first time this season, falling 15-10.

Beau Weathers lost 19-6 at 140 before Shawn Jiminez stopped the bleeding with a third-period pin at 145.

The victory keeps Jiminez undefeated this season.

At 152, Taylor Huite lost an 11-5 decision.

“He put up a heck of a fight,” Tillery said of Huite.

At 160, Emory Wheeler was pinned in the first period.

Justin Jones got the Packers six points when he pinned his Bearcat opponent in the first period.

Donovan McGowan, just recruited to wrestle at 189, was pinned.

The Packers made a late run, winning their final two matches.

At 215, Ricky Grier won his third straight match after a season-opening loss. And at 285, Antonio Sutton pinned his opponent 20 seconds into the opening period.

Sutton, too, remains unbeaten.

Colquitt County also wrestled four junior varsity matches.

Freshman Chandler Carswell lost by a pin in the second period.

Sophomore Erik Robinson lost on a first period pin.

J.J. Prince also was pinned in the first period.

Freshman Dillon Underwood got the lone junior varsity victory with a first-period pin.
