Seventh-graders sweep Tift

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County seventh-grade basketball teams made the first games played at the Charlie A. Gray Middle School gymnasium memorable ones, sweeping the Eighth-Street Middle School teams from Tift County on Monday.
In the girls game, Colquitt County got 26 points from Maranda Trim in a 34-23 victory.
The boys game went to overtime, with the Packers Dequan Nelson hitting a free throw with 7.5 left for a 46-45 victory.
Nelson scored his only basket of the game with 1:22 left in regulation to tie the game at 39-39 and neither team could score again before the buzzer.
Tift took the first lead of the overtime on a basket by Chris Bolton, who led all scorers with 25 points.
But Rashad Richardson tied the game at 41 with a pair of free throws.
A basket by Ty Smith put the Packers up 43-41, but Michael Stevenson tied the game at 41 with a basket.
Richardson hit two more free throws to put the Packers up by two, but Bolton got a tip-in with 17.8 seconds left in overtime to tie the game one last time.
Nelson was fouled while shooting with 7.5 seconds left and missed the first shot.
But the seconds bounced around before falling through.
Tift County had one more chance at the other end, but could not score.
The game was tied nine times, including twice in the fourth quarter and three times in overtime.
Smith led Colquitt County with 18 points. Richardson added 12.
Trey Scott had seven, Nelson had three, Matt Sailor and Rashad Sharpe each had two and Stacy Blackwell had a free throw.
The victory raises the seventh-grade boys team’s record to 2-2.
The loss was the first of the season for Tift County, which falls to 2-1.
The girls game was close for three quarters, with the Lady Packers taking a five-point lead into the final quarter.
But Trim took over the game in the final seven minutes, scoring 16 of her 26 points over a span that saw a 16-15 Colquitt County lead balloon to the 34-23 final score.
In the final 54 seconds of the third quarter, Trim had a basket and two 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer.
She added three baskets and two free throws in the final quarter.
Cheyenne Reynolds added six points and Ja’nice Sailor had two for Colquitt County.
The Colquitt County seventh-grade girls are now 2-1. Tift’s girls fall to 2-1.
The seventh-graders will be back at the Charlie A. Gray Middle School gymnasium next Monday to take on Hahira, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
While the Colquitt County seventh-grader boys were winning in overtime in Moultrie, the eighth-grade team was losing to Tift County in Tifton in overtime.
After winning their first four games of the season, the eighth-grade Packers struggled early and then came up short in overtime, losing 42-38.
Quan Daniels led Colquitt County with 17 points. Cornelius James added six, Tre DeBruce added five, Cole Pitts had three and Gary Thomas and Rashaun Hunt each had two.
The Colquitt County girls also came up short against Tift County, losing 41-28, despite 15 points by Bria Wallace.
Sarah Strong had nine and Brittany Taylor and Phatema Wiley each had two.
The eighth-graders will meet Worth County beginning at 4:30 p.m. next Monday at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium.
