MOULTRIE — It was cold and windy and only the hardiest of fans turned out on Thursday at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center to support the Colquitt County High School divers who were trying to qualify for the state swimming and diving meet.

The state meet will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta.

And despite the chilly conditions, 11 of the 12 Colquitt County divers turned in qualifying scores in the Packer Invitational.

Kelsey Goodman, Hannah Moore, Ann Perry Blank, Anna Aguero, Ali Lepech, Staci Howard, Maddie Qurnell, Erin Goodman, Ryan Helms, Owen Blank and Jacob Russell easily qualified.

Henry Norman is expected to qualify when the team dives again on Jan. 6 at Darton College.

Anahea Bassham, Camila McLean and Aaron D’Dario judged the event. Steve Walsh was the Georgia High School Association official.

The state allows 11-dive and six-diving qualifying. For six dives, the degree of difficulty is 11.8 for boys and 11.3 for girls and the score must be 200 points to qualify.

For 11 dives, the degree of difficulty limit is 12.0 for boys and 11.5 for girls. Divers must score 270 points.

Helms, Moore and Kelsey Goodman each scored more than 270 points on six dives on Thursday.

For high school All-American consideration, boys must had a 13.3 degree of difficulty and girls a 13.0 and must score 375 points.

Helms had the team’s top score on Thursday, turning in a 361.50. Owen Blank had a 261.65 and Russell had a 240.45.

Among the eight girls on the Colquitt County team, Kelset Goodman had a 277.90. Moore, who recently signed with the University of Georgia, had a 270.15.

Ann Perry Blank had a 256.20; Aguero, a 242.45; Lepech, a 241.50; Howard, a 214.90; Qurnell, a 213.15; and Erin Goodman, a 212.30.

Helms, a junior, has won the state Class AAAAA championship each of the last two years. Blank was fourth last February.

Lepech was just 12 points behind state champion Lexie Bryant of Duluth High in Feburary. Moore, who won the state championship as a freshman, was third last year. Aguero was fourth and Howard was fifth.

The divers, all members of the Moss Farms Diving program, will be in Athens today for the Georgia All-Star meet and awards banquet.
