Hall, Trimble score in ABAC opener

Former Colquitt County High basketball players John Michael Hall and James Trimble each scored four points as the Abraham Baldwin College basketball team defeated Enterprise-Ozark Community College 100-76 in its season-opener on Wednesday.

Hall is a sophomore for the Stallions. Trimble is a freshman.

The Stallions will meet the Brewton-Parker College junior varsity on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Of this and that:

• Three Region 1-AAAAA teams reached the Class AAAAA state softball Elite Eight last week, but all lost their first game and were soon eliminated.

Lowndes fell to Mill Creek 9-3 in its Elite Eight opener, but bounced back to blank East Coweta in a losers bracket game before being eliminated by Peachtree Ridge 4-1.

It was Peachtree Ridge that dealt Houston County a 9-4 defeat and dropped the Lady Bears to the losers bracket.

Houston County lost its first losers bracket game, falling to cross-town rival and fellow Region 1-AAAAA member Warner Robins 1-0.

The Demonettes lost their Elite Eight opener to eventual state champion Woodstock 5-3.

After defeating Houston County, Warner Robins was eliminated by Collins Hill.

Woodstock won four straight in the finals to claim the school’s first state championship in any sport.

The Wolverines defeated Warner Robins 5-3; Peachtree Ridge 4-2; Mill Creek 5-0; and, in Tuesday’s championship game at Lovejoy Regional Park, knocked off Collins Hill 6-3.

• The Marquett Catholic High Explorers of Alton, Ill., advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs last week with a 7-6 victory over the DuQuoin High Indians.

Former Packer Ty Barnett had an interception near the end of the game to help seal the victory for the Explorers, who were ranked No. 10 in The Associated Press 3A poll.

Marquette Catholic, now 9-1, will play Ann-Jonesboro in the second round.

• Former Packer Brian Knighton is still leading the Fort Valley State football team in rushing with 533 yards on 119 carries and three touchdowns this season.

The 4-5 Wildcats will meet Albany State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Columbus.

• Valdosta State University’s Sherard Reynolds continues to lead the Gulf South Conference in punt returns with 27 for 430 yards, a 15.9 average.

The Blazers, ranked No. 16 in the nation, will meet Arkansas-Monticello at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

Valdosta State, 6-2, is coming off an 31-24 overtime loss to North Alabama.

n Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame member Vanessa Taylor is preparing her sixth Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team for its season-opener on Nov. 7 in the Queen City Classic.
