Special Olympians win three golds

MOULTRIE — Three Colquitt County Special Olympics teams won gold medals at the recent State Fall Games held at the Gordon Complex in Albany.
The games included competition in bocce, cycling, softball, softball skills, long distance walking and running, golf and golf skills.
The Colquitt County junior unified softball team and two junior traditional bocce teams from Willie J. Williams took first-place finishes.
The softball team was the only one entered in its division, but it also chose to play in the senior masters unified division and took a bronze medal in that competition.
In the masters competition, Colquitt County won its first game by a forfeit, then lost to the Augusta Stars 11-10.
After winning two games via the mercy rule in its first two losers bracket games, the Colquitt County team was eliminated by Augusta 12-6.
“The were playing up,” said Colquitt County Special Olympics coordinator Grant Hammack. “That’s really a compliment for our kids.”
Playing on the Colquitt County softball team were Stephanie Reynolds, Dre Ford, Adam Crosby, Drew Marchant, Eric Palmore, Jessica Prosser, Johnell Walker, Kenny Ashby, Jacob Wynn and Landon Bass.
The softball team’s coach is Alicia Benton.
The Willie J. Williams Middle School Tigers took part in the junior traditional bocce competition and won three of four games to take the gold medal.
The Tigers defeated the Troup County Mighty Rollers, then lost to the Troup County Hawks.
But the Tigers then defeated the Rollers and the Hawks in succession to win the gold.
The team included Josh Torbert, Brianna Summerlin, Rebecca Hampton and Rashad Johnson.
The Packers won three straight to take their gold medal, winning over the Troup Lady Hawks, the DeKalb County Bulldogs and the Lady Hawks again.
The Packers included James Moxley, Deon Grant, Justin Grant and Justin Law.
Colquitt County Special Olympics is currently preparing for the Area Winter Games, which will be held in Moultrie on Nov. 17.
