MOULTRIE — There were a lot of “firsts” for the Moultrie MG’s as they competed at In Bound Gymnastics Center in Albany recently.
The YMCA Levels 3 and 4 AAU teams competed in the first out-of-town meet this season.
It was the first time for the gymnasts to be judged by Florida judges and it was their first time competing in a non- air conditioned facility.
“The MG’s faced the challenges head on and had a record-breaking day on beam and bars,” said coach Murphy. “The girls really hit their finish positions on the beam, routines were excellent and many of our gymnasts broke their own personal best records.”
Murphy credited volunteers coaches Donna Marshall, at level 3, and Mary Ann Phillips, level 4.
Brooklyn Ritter, age 7, led the Level 3 team with her AA score of 35.075, a personal best.
Her record-tying bar score of 9.30, for first place, is the highest score ever for Level 3 bars. She shares the record with Allison Fagan.
“Brooklyn’s smooth connections really made her bar routine stand out,” said Murphy.
Ritter also took two more first places with vault 8.85, and floor 8.225.
Another record-breaker was Rachel Sasine, age 8, who broke the team record on beam with a 9.375 by two- tenths of a point.
“Rachel’s routine was spectacular to watch and her form was excellent,” said Murphy. Sasine’s AA 33.95 was also a personal best.
The next highest AA was by Amber Ross, age 13, with a 35.025 for first place in her age division.
This was a personal best for Ross, as were three other scores of 8.6 on bars, 9.325 beam and 8.75 floor, all taking first place.
These scores also counted towards the team score.
“Amber looked awesome on beam with a great handstand,” said Murphy.
Coming in second place AA for the age 11 division was Shan Summerlin with a 34.4, a personal best.
Summerlin also broke two other personal best records with a 8.6 on vault and a 9.2 on beam both counting towards team score.
“Shan has been working hard on a tighter form and it’s starting to show,” Murphy said.
Janna Tucker had the next highest AA of 33.75 earning her a first place in the age 10 division.
Tucker also brought in first place with a 9.1 on beam.
“Janna had a really pretty routine and it was a personal best,” said Murphy.
The age 9 division AA first place winner was Kelsey Phillips with a 33.6. Phillips also broke two more personal bests with a 9.15 beam for first place and 8.45 vault for second.
“Kelsey’s tight body position and straight lines on beam made for a great routine,” said Murphy.
In the age 7 division Leah Grace Wiggins brought in the second place AA with 33.25 and took first place on beam with 9.05.
“Leah Grace hit all her handstands and had smooth jumps on beam today helping break her personal best,” said Murphy.
Winning second place AA with a 33.025 in the age 10 division was Aubrey Snyder.
“Aubrey has been working hard to improve her overall performance and it’s paying off,” said Murphy.
Snyder took a first place on floor with 8.5 and broke two personal bests with 8.25 bars and 8.225 beam.
Aja McLeMore, age 8, came in next with an AA of 33.0.
She broke her personal best on beam with 8.55 and her scores on vault 8.825 and floor 8.525 counted towards team score.
“Aja wanted to improve her beam from last meet and she did and also had scores counting toward team again,” said Murphy.
In the 14 age division, Denise Jenkins brought in a first place on vault with a score of 8.5, a personal best.
“Denise has a fast steady run and good vaulting form,” said Murphy.
Jenkins also broke two more personal bests on beam 8.55 and her AA 32.5.
Scarlett Gully, age 7, broke four of her personal best records this meet. Gully had an AA of 31.650, 8.35 beam, 8.0 vault and 7.250 bars.
“Scarlett is really beginning to learn how to compete and breaking 4 personal bests at one meet was exciting,” said Murphy.
“We had an absolutely awesome meet with many girls breaking their personal bests. It is exciting to see them working toward a goal and making it,” said Murphy.
The MG team will travel to Tifton for competition later this month.
