MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls needed a victory over Valdosta on Tuesday in Valdosta to ensure a place in the state playoffs.

But the Lady Packers came up short, losing to the Lady Wildcats 3-2 in eight innings, putting their playoffs hopes in serious peril.

“A lot of things can still happen,” Lady Packers coach Carman Phillips said. “There’s still a chance. It is going to depend on what Lowndes and Tifton do.”

The loss drops the Lady Packers to 15-13 overall and 5-7 in the Region 1-AAAAA standings.

A victory over the Lady Wildcats, whom the Lady Packers had defeated by the same 3-2 score on Aug. 29, would have had Colquitt County at 6-6 and likely would have meant at least the No. 4 spot from the region to the state tournament.

Houston County and Warner Robins are atop the region standings with 8-1 records.

After falling 5-0 to Warner Robins on Monday and 1-0 to Coffee on Tuesday, Tift County is 4-6 in the region with games at Lowndes and at home with Houston County remaining.

On Tuesday, Tift County got eight hits, but could not manage a run behind starting pitcher Rachel Segers, who struck out 10, gave up five hits and surrendered just one unearned run.

Lowndes is 4-5 in the region with a games against Tift County, Warner Robins and Coffee remaining.

Colquitt County had the same problems Tift County encountered on Tuesday: failure to get a timely hit.

The Lady Packers stranded 13 runners and twice left the bases loaded against Valdosta, now 3-8 in the region.

“We just couldn’t get a clutch hit when we needed it,” Phillips said.

The game also featured several crucial, controversial calls that went against the Lady Packers, Phillips said.

Camille James led Colquitt with three hits. Morgan Jones, Tiffany Troupe and Brittany Sikes each had two and Ashley Everett and Nikki Hudson each had one.

The Lady Packers went 3-2 in Vikette Invitational in Valdosta last weekend.

On Friday, Colquitt lost to Lanier County 7-3, but defeated Cross Creek 7-3.

Colquitt opened Saturday’s play with a 6-1 loss to Lee County, but rallied to defeat Crisp County 5-1 and Bainbridge 8-7. If the Lady Packers do not make the playoffs, they will finish with a 15-13 record.
