District tennis draws 47 players

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County players won five singles titles and four doubles titles in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s District III tournament held this week at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.

The tournament drew 47 players from Moultrie, Valdosta, Tifton and Mitchell County.

Moultrie players also were the runners-up in six singles and two doubles divisions.

The winners and runners-up advance to the GRPA state tournament, which will be held July 14-15, also at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex courts.

Moultrie players who have advanced to the state tournament are Josh Smith, Cody Jenkins, Courtney Terrell, Andrew Harvin, Coby King, Rachel Funderburk, David Forehand, Reed Wells, Blake Jenkins, Bo Blalock, Jana Harvin, Constance Terrell, Ivey Jane Reeves, Laura Hill Bannister, Christopher Harvin, Jessica Harvin, Carli Hester and Kayla Kelley.

In 10-and-under boys singles, Cody Jenkins won his first-round match over Mitchell County’s Lott Warren, 6-1, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Jenkins defeated Reid Lindsey of Valdosta 6-1, 6-1, and Josh Smith won over Mitchell County’s Matthew Hilliard by default.

Smith won the championship, defeating Jenkins 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In 10-and-under girls singles, Courtney Terrell was unchallenged.

In 12-and-under boys singles, Andrew Harvin won over Mitchell County’s Cody Carden 6-0, 6-0, and Coby King won over Akash Patel of Mitchell County 6-0, 6-0.

Harvin defeated King in the finals 6-1, 6-0.

In 12-and-under girls singles, Rachel Funderburk won over Abbey Anglin of Mitchell County by default.

In 14-and-under boys singles, Bo Blalock won his first-round match over Matthew Hayes of Mitchell County 6-2, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Blalock won over Valdosta’s Morley Sherman 6-0, 6-0, and Blake Jenkins defeated Braden Anglin of Mitchell County 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

In the finals, Jenkins defeated Blalock 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-3.

In 16-and-under singles play, Mitchell County’s Will Murphy won his first-round match over Valdosta’s Saban Patel 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In the semifinals, Tifton’s Thomas Flowers won over Murphy 6-3, 6-3, and Christopher Harvin defeated Taylor High of Mitchell County 6-2, 6-1.

In the finals, Flowers defeated Harvin 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

In the 16-and-under girls division, Jessica Harvin won one semifinal match over Jessica Sharp of Valdsota, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, and Alicia Shaw of Mitchell County defeated Carli Hester 6-3, 6-4.

Shaw took division title with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Harvin.

In 18-and-under boys, Valdosta’s Stephen Moore defeated John Buerkle of Mitchell County 6-3, 6-3.

In the finals, Bryant Anglin of Mitchell County defeated Moore 6-4, 7-5.

Valdosta’s Alison Keener took the 18-and-under girls title by default over Mitchell County’s Brooke Anglin.

In the 10-and-under boys doubles division, Josh Smith and Cody Jenkins won their semifinal match over Lott Warren and Alex Carden of Mitchell County 6-0, 6-0. Smith and Jenkins then took the first-place torphy by defeating Brock Allen and Clint Godwin of Mitchell County 6-0, 6-1.

In the 12-and-under boys finals, Andrew Harvin and Coby King defeated David Forehand and Reed Wells 6-0, 6-1.

Mitchell County’s Braden Anglin and Wheeler Briggs won their semifinal match over Stephen Brown and Jacob Tompkins of Moultrie 6-4, 6-1.

In the finals, Blake Jenkins and Bo Blalock won over Anglin and Briggs 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

In the all-Moultrie finals of the girls 14-and-under doubles, Jana Harvin and Constance Terrell won over Ivey Jane Reeves and Laura Hill Bannister.
