Sharks tune up for state

MOULTRIE — The Moultrie Sharks Swim Team and the the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department tuned up for next month’s state swim meet by playing host to some 360 young swimmers on Saturday.
The third annual Georgia Games-Moultrie Invitational Swim Meet was the largest event at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex pool since Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s state meet was held there in 2003.
The state meet will return to Moultrie on July 21-22 when an estimated 700 young swimmers ages 5 through 18 will compete for medals in individual and relay events.
Last Saturday, a meet-record 15 teams brought 360 swimmers from Georgia and Florida to Moultrie.
The Sharks finished 10th overall and received some outstanding performances Austin Vines, Caroline Rogers, Andy Alekseichuk, Caroline Palmer, Ashlee Paramore and several relay teams.
Also competing on Saturday were the Tiftarea YMCA, Thomasville YMCA, Stone Creek Coral Reef, Douglas Swim Team, Live Oak (Fla.) Swim Club, Bainbridge Extreme, Cairo Sharks, Columbia (Fla.) Swim Team, Marianna (Fla) Marlins, Valdosta YMCA, Wayne County, Fitzgerald, Ware County and the Albany YMCA.
The Tiftarea YMCA Tidal Wave, with a contingent of 48 swimmers — the meet’s largest — finished first overall with 1,101 points. Douglas was second with 985 points. Bainbridge finished third with 895 points, just one point better than the Grady-Cairo Sharks.
The Thomasville YMCA had 873 points and Stone Creek Coral Reef was sixth with 858 points.
The Sharks had 426.5 points. The team was eighth in the girls standings and 10th among the boys teams.
The Tiftarea YMCA was first among the girls teams with 701.5 points. The Douglas Stingrays were the top-scoring boys team with 676 points.
Vines turned in the top performance for the Sharks, scoring 44 points.
Swimming in the boys 11-12 age group, Vines finished second in 50-yard backstroke with a 41.26; fifth in the 50 butterfly; sixth in both the 100 freestyle and the 100 individual medley; and 10th in the 50 freestyle.
Rogers contributed 42 points to the Sharks total, including 11 for her fourth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.
Swimming in the 13-14 age group, Rogers also had sixth-place finishes in the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 100 individual medley and an eighth-place finish in the 50 butterfly.
Alekseichuk’s 38 points included 16 for his gold medal performance in the boys 9-10 25-yard breaststroke.
He also was sixth in the 25 butterfly, seventh in the 50 freestyle, eighth in the 25 freestyle and 12th in the 25 backstroke.
Palmer, who totaled 29 points, had four finishes in the top nine in the girls 6-and-under division. She was sixth in both the 25 breaststroke and the 25 butterfly; seventh in the 25 freestyle; and ninth in the 25 backstroke.
Paramore had 20 points in the girls 15-18 age group.
She had eighth-place finishes in the 100 individual medley and 50 backstroke; ninth-place finishes in the 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke; and an 11th-place in the 50 freestyle.
Also scoring points for the Sharks in individual events were Sarah Gibson (12), Amy Peek (6.5), Burton Brown (5), Kayla Murphy (5), Sara Jenkins (4) and Hayden Van Dalsem (3).
Winning points in the relay events were:
• Girls 7-8 100 medley relay team of Laura Lee Murphy, Mallory Herndon, Kayla Murphy and Mollie Brown, fifth.
• Girls 7-8 medley relay team of Savannah Blalock, Caroline Palmer, Sarah Gibson and Teryn Davis, seventh.
• Girls 11-12 200 medley relay team of Staci Repass, Haley Goodman, Cheyenne Pritchett and Ansley Moore, seventh.
• Girls 13-14 200 medley relay team of Hayden Va n Dalsem, Amy Peek, Caroline Rogers and Sara Jenkins, third.
• Girls 15-18 200 medley relay team of Ashlee Paramore, Jessica Price, Samantha Price and Katherine Moore, fourth.
• Boys 15-18 200 medley relay team of Stephen Walsh, Andrei Alekseichuk, Austin Vines and Connor Walsh, third.
• Girls 7-8 100 freestyle relay team of Kayla Murphy, Mollie Brown, Laura Lee Murphy and Mallory Herndon, fifth.
• Girls 11-12 200 freestyle relay team of Ansley Moore, Haley Goodman, Cheyenne Pritchett and Katherine Moore, ninth.
• Girls 13-14 200 freestyle relay team of Caroline Rogers, Sara Jenkins, Hayden Van Dalsem and Amy Peek, third.
• Girls 15-18 200 freestyle relay team of Samantha Price, Jessica Price, Ashlee Paramore and Staci Repass, third.
• Boys 15-18 200 freestyle relay team of Connor Walsh, Stephen Walsh, Austin Vines and Burton Brown, third.
