Colquitt seventh in state all-sports ranking

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County High may have finished second behind Lowndes High in the final Region 1-AAAAA all-sports standings, but there were no schools from the region — or from anywhere other than the Atlanta Metro area — above it in final Class AAAAA standings.

Colquitt County finished seventh in Class AAAAA Director’s Cup standings, a ranking made each year by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association to recognize athletic departments in each of Georgia High School Association’s five classifications.

The GADA presents a Directors Cup trophy and a banner to the stop male program, top female program and top overall program in the state.

Collins Hill took first place overall for the 2005-2005 school year with 840 points. It was followed by Harrison and Walton, 700 points; Parkview, 640; Starr’s Mill, 590; Brookwood, 580; and Colquitt County, 503.33.

Colquitt County’s point total was more than double what it tallied in 2004-2005.

Lowndes High, which finished first in the Region 1-AAAAA points standings, was 10th, with 410 points.

The Georgia High School Association’s 25 sports are included and each school’s eight highest-scoring sports for each gender are counted.

State champions are awarded 100 points; state runners-up, 80 points; third and fourth place, 60 points; fifth-through eighth place, 40 points; ninth-16th place, 20 points; and 17th-32 place, 10 points.

Colquitt County moved up 15 places after ranking 22nd last year, with just 240 points.

The Colquitt County boys, led by the golf team’s state championship, was seventh overall with 280 points.

Colquitt County’s girls, which received only 50 points for its gymnastics state championship, was 11th with 233.33 points.

“This has been a wonderful, wonderful year,” said Colquitt County’s first-year athletic director Darius Dawson. “We had some great kids.”

Colquitt County received 100 points for its state golf championship and 80 for its state runner-up finish in rifle.

The boys track team presented the school with 60 points for its third-place finish. Colquitt County received 50 points for the gymnastics title.

Earning 40 points were the girls basketball team, which reached the final eight in the state; the girls golf team, which finished sixth at the state meet; and the girls tennis team, which also reached the final eight.

Earning 20 points were the football, girls softball and girls soccer teams, which reached the final 16.

The girls diving-swimming team contributed 13.33 points and the boys diving-swimming team and boys basketball teams each had 10 points.

Colquitt County fields team in 21 of the 25 sports sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association. The only sports in which it does not participate are boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, slow-pitch softball and volleyball.

The school received points in 13 of those sports.

The sports in which Colquitt County failed to score points were boys cross country, girls cross country, wrestling, cheerleading, girls track, boys soccer, boys tennis and baseball.

The other Region 1-AAAAA teams are their rankings are Lowndes, 10th, 410 points; Houston County, 23rd, 290 points; Tift County 24th, 280 points; Valdosta, 33rd, 180 points; and Coffee, 55th, 70 points.

Warner Robins, which will join Region 1-AAAAA in the coming school year, was 18th in the Class AAAA standings with 256.66 points.

Marist was first in Class AAAA with 1,010 points that included three state championships and five state runner-up finishes.

Collins Hill, located in Suwanee in Gwinnett County, had Class AAAAA state championships in softball, girls cross country, girls basketball and girls track and was the state runner-up in wrestling.
