MOULTRIE — About 375 mortarboard caps are to fly into the sky during commencement services this morning, signaling a transition into adulthood for Colquitt County High School (CCHS) graduates.

This class is distinguished with an impressive number of honor graduates. The Class of 2006 produced 47 honor graduates, more than double that of last year, said CCHS Principal Bob Jones Friday.

For all the accomplishments of this class, at least 47 students won’t be marching yet. These students didn’t pass all portions of the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). The number is down one from last year, but that’s not much progress, Jones said.

CCHS will celebrate seniors who accomplish their graduation requirements this summer in an August ceremony, just as it provided last year, Jones said. Teachers are lined to tutor seniors attempting the GHSGT again this July. Sessions will be advertised, he said.

Also, there are some students who wouldn’t have marched because they were short on class units. Many of those are headed to summer school. In fact, registration for summer school this year is the largest ever, the principal said. Some 600 students signed up.

“We’ll continue on in terms of summer tutoring, fall tutoring. If the schedule allows it, winter semester prior to the test, just like we did this year. We’ll pull them out of their electives and focus them real hard on those that aren’t currently taking a science or social studies or English class. Some we won’t have to pull out, because they are already in a class,” Jones said.
