Gymnasts outstanding in Red, White and You

MOULTRIE — The Moultrie YMCA’s Red, White and You Invitational gymnastics meet was called “fantastic” gymnastics director Pat Murphy.
The Moultrie gymnasts had three first-place teams, with 10 team records broken and they scored 39 nines.
“It was by far our biggest, best, and most smooth running competition held in the Donald A. Blevins Gymnastics Center due to our wonderful group of Parent’s Club volunteers,” Murphy said. “Everyone worked together and filled in where ever we needed them.
“We couldn’t have done it without our volunteer coaches too,” said Murphy.
Bob Swadel, Wendy Scites, Donna Marshall, Angie Kling and Mary Ann Phillips volunteer several hours a week to help this YMCA program.
The Moultrie YMCA’s Level 4 team got some revenge in its first-place performance,m
“Our Level 4 team was absolutely awesome taking first place over our rival team the Valdosta YMCA, “coach Patti Merritt said.
“They have beaten us all year but at this meet, it was our turn to shine!”
Sammie Phillips broke the team All Around record with a 35.775 for first place in the 6-8 age group.
Phillips led the team by scoring 3 nines; 9.350 – floor for first place, 9.025 – vault for third, 9.0 – bars for first.
“I knew Sammie’s graceful presentation would lead her to these high scores,” said Murphy.
The second highest scoring gymnast in the 9-year-old group was Allison Fagan, who finished with a 34.775, her personal best so far.
“Allison had an excellent vault winning her a first place with a 9.425,” said Merritt.
Also competing in the age 9 division was Clara Gene Vines with an all around of 32.775 for seventh place.
Win-ning a second place in the All Around in the 10-year-old group was Gwenda Hendrick with her personal best of 34.650.
“Gwenda hit all her handstands on beam for her best score ever of 8.70 for second place,” said Murphy.
Amber Kling came in fourth All Around in the 6-8 age group with a 33.750. Merritt said she had “a tight beam routine to bring her a third place score of 8.30.
Also in the 6-8 age group, placing first on beam was Sidney Cokely with an 8.575.
“This was her best beam routine by far,” said Murphy.
The Moultrie YMCA team had seven gymnasts competing for the first time.
On the Level 4 team was Kaydee Phillips finishing with an AA of 33.425 to place sixth.
On the Level 3 team performing for the first time in the 6-year -old division with an AA of 33.350 was Addi Yost. She took first in all her events.
In the 7-year-age group was Brooklyn Ritter and Leah Grace Wiggins who both tied for sixth with their AA scores, 34.125.
Rachel Sasine in the age 8 group had an AA score of 33.325, also to place sixth.
Level 3s in the age 10 division competing for the first time were, Lakyn Davis, a 34.775 AA for fifth and second on beam 8.9 and third on vault 9.3; Janna Tucker, 34.200 AA for seventh, third on beam with an 8.75; and Libby McCrary, a 30.975 AA for ninth.
“Our Level 3s really busted out this meet,” Merritt said.
Leading the team was Timia Fowler with an AA 36.00 for fourth place.
“Timia broke the team record with that score, she looked really good that day,” said Merritt.
Fowler came in first in the age 7 group on beam with a 9.025, and second on vault with a 9.275 breaking her own personal score.
Savana Robertson competed in the age 8 group with an AA of 33.70 for fifth and broke several of her personal scores: 9.050 on vault for fourth, 8.950 on bars for third and 8.50 on beam sixth.
Jaycee Ellenberg competed in the Level 3 age 9 division breaking her personal best record on vault with a 9.05 for fifth and she placed third on beam with a 8.5.
In the same age group was Caitlin Rollock breaking her best records on vault with a 9.075 for fourth and beam with an 8.650 for second.
Kristina Scott broke four event records with her an AA of 33.250 for sixth, a 9.150 on vault for third place, 8.10 on bars, and 7.750 on floor.
In the age 10 division, Hanna Friedlander, who broke through all of her five her personal records with second on vault, 9.325; fourth, 9.050, on bars; fourth, 8.70, on beam; fifth, 8.45 on floor and an AA of 35.525 for fourth place.
The level 3 team placed third overall with Winder YMCA first and Houston County YMCA second.
“I am really proud of all of these compulsory girls,” said Merritt.
Competing for Level 5, were three girls from different age divisions also breaking personal records.
Camille Kirkland, 9 year old group, had an 8.450 on floor for fifth and on her best event, the uneven bars, Kirkland placed second scoring 8.25.
Betsy Booth, in 10-year-old group, had an 8.450 on beam coming in third. Heather Harvell, in 13 and older age group, had an 8.70 on floor earning her first place.
Harvell also finished first on beam with 8.3 and in the AA with a 33.10, which gave her second place in that division.
The level 5 team placed fifth with the Valdosta YMCA winning the competition.
“This was a difficult competition for our Level 5s but they came through managing to break personal records,” said Murphy.
There were only had two Moultrie YMCA gymnasts in Level 6, both in the 9- year-old age division, which is not enough to compete for a team award.
Susannah Harvell broke her personal best on bars with a 7.30 for third and finished third place AA with a 31.30.
“Auburn Williams really performed better at this meet in this new level, breaking all of her records,” said Murphy.
Williams placed fourth overall with an AA 30.350.
The optional teams, Levels 7, 8 and 9 performed, well in their home gym for the hometown crowd.
“It was a great tune-up for the YMCA National Meet,” said Coach Bob Swadel. “It served my purpose with a good scoring event.”
Brooke Robinson, Level 7 age group 7-11, came in first with a 34.750 AA and broke two personal bests earning 1st place in both events with a 9.30 on vault and 9.40 on bars.
Kristin Whitman, also Level 7, age 12 division, topped four of her personal best records with a 7.50 on bars, 8.90 on beam, 9.150 on floor to win first place on each event, and had an AA of 34.550.
Meghan Merritt was injured and unable to compete.
Leading the Level 8 team in the 12-13 year old division was Kenyadah Prime and Kambria Blakely.
Each gymnast broke every one of her personal best records and several team records.
“These first year level 8 girls have worked very hard to improve their performances and succeeded,” Swadel said.
Prime earned first place AA with a 36.80 and broke her own best scores with a 9.475 on vault for second place; 9.60 on bars, which also topped the team record and brought her a first place; a 8.575 on beam earning her second place and 9.150 on floor also for a second place.
Blakely had a 36.775 for a second place AA, and broke her own best records, as well team records, on vault with a 9.725 for first place and a 9.20 on floor for first place on that event.
Blakely also had an 8.90 on beam for first place and 8.90 on bars for second place.
In the 14-15 year old group, Krysta Michael led with an AA of 35.15 for first place and broke her personal best on floor with a 9.025 for first place.
Kaitlin Tucker earned second place AA with a 34.725, which also topped her best score thus far. Tucker also broke her personal best on bars with a 9.00 for first and a 9.00 on floor for a second place in that event.
Three gymnasts competed in the senior division of Level 8 for age 16 and older.
Krista Wood had a 35.050 AA for first place which also topped her best AA score this year. She also broke three more of her personal records with a 8.80 on bars, a 8.60 on beam and a 9.150 on floor, for a first place in all three events, and had a second place on vault with a 8.50.
Crystal Blizzard broke three of her personal best scores on beam and floor. Blizzard earned a third place AA with a 33.050.
The level 8 team placed first.
The Level 9 gymnasts also took first place.
In the 14-15 age group, Leah May had an 8.250 on bars and a 8.875 on beam earning first place on both events.
May also busted two of her best scores with a 9.20 on vault and a 9.425 on floor for a first place in those events also with a 35.750 for 1st place AA.
In our senior division 16 and older age group, three gymnasts brought in the top three places, breaking personal best and team records.
Devin Corgan led with an AA of 36.90 for first place, a personal best. She also broke two other team records for first places on vault with a 9.350 and bars with a 9.250.
Meghan Marshall also topped her personal best and earned second place AA with a 36.10.
Tara Cowart brought in a third place AA with a score of 34.60 and broke her personal best on floor with a 9.40 winning first place in that event.
“Our Optional team has been working hard to prepare for their biggest goal of the year and we are proud to have them represent our gym in the YMCA National meet in Hanover, PA next month,” Murphy said.
