Ruth Heirs Walsh

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ruth Hiers Walsh, 84, of Greensboro, N.C., died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Evergreens in Greensboro.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at Pinecrest Cemetery.

A native of Moultrie, Mrs. Walsh was the daughter of the late Phillip Heirs and the late Nancy McAfee Heirs. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Moultrie. She had lived in Reidsville, N.C. for the last 12 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maj. Milton Richard Walsh, USAF.

Survivors include a son, Phillip E. Walsh of Brown Summit, N.C.; two granddaughters, Amy W. Jones and husband David of Reidsville, N.C., and Tech. Sgt. Kimberley B. Walsh, USAF, of Burkburnett, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Austin K. Jones and Claire E. Jones, both of Reidsville, N.C.

Rachel Cowan

NORFOLK, Va. — Rachel Cowan, 83, died Friday, May 5, 2006, at Tenden Health Center in Norfolk, Va.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Strong Funeral Home with Bro. Hollis Holloway officiating. Burial will follow at Strong Memorial Garden.

Born Feb. 17, 1923, in Dougherty County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late John Bly and the late Louise Bly, and she was a nurse.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Cowan; son, Major Williams of Santon, Texas; sisters, Bennie Jenkins of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Bernice Bly of Moultrie; sisters-in-law, Clara Bly of Moultrie, Mozell Wiston of Norfolk, Va., and Byrdell Branch of Portsmith, Va.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lucy Brown Barata

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Lucy Brown Barata, 75, of Moultrie died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in Virginia Beach, Va.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Westview Cemetery with the Rev. Hugh Ward officiating.

Born Oct. 22, 1930, in Colquitt County, she was the daughter of the late Bernice McHargue Brown and the late John Astor Brown.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen Brown Peters and Allawee Bernice Brown.

Survivors include her daughter, Leigh Gregory and husband Richard of Virginia Beach, Va., and one grandchild, Wesley Ellen Gregory of Virginia Beach, Va.

Visitation will be tonight, Friday, May 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cobb Funeral Chapel.

MOULTRIE — Dorothy Watson, 86, of Moultrie died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services will be at noon today, Friday, May 12, in Sardis Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Stone officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Watson; a daughter, Carolyn Burnette; parents, George W. Davis and Roxie Rice Davis; sisters, Johnnie Heath and Grady Davis; and brothers, Hal Roy Davis and Marvin Davis.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Tillman of Moultrie; three sisters, Augusta Olliff of Moultrie, Sarah Pittman of Valdosta and Margaret Davis of Moultrie; son-in-law, Bernard Burnette and wife Elizabeth of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Donna Tillman, Roxanne Anderson, David Burnette and wife Judy and Lisa Burnette; five great-grandchildren, Shelby Burnette, Brooke Hester, Christian Stamets, Chris Pugh and Megan Pugh.

Mary Lounette Sherrod Chastain

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. — Mary Lounette Sherrod Chastain, 77, of Bainbridge, Ga., died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Hospitality Care Center in Thomasville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bainbridge, Ga., with Dr. Danny Shepard officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with John Ward, Bobby Ward, Lee Ward, Drew Shealy, Michael Chastain, Chase Chastain and Ben Chastain serving as pallbearers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Young Chastain.

Born Dec. 8, 1928, in Thomas County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Frank Hoyt Sherrod and the late Evie Willis Sherrod. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Tony Chastain of Roswell, Ga., and Ronnie Chastain of LaGrange, Ga.; three daughters, Pat Brinson of Whigham, Ga., Terry Ward of Bainbridge, Ga., and Joy Shealy of Moultrie; one brother, Dwight Sherrod of Boston, Ga.; five sisters, Jewel Griffin of Thomasville, Carolyn Vonier of Pavo, Christine Bannister of Riverdale, Ga., Lucille Carson of Boston, Ga., and Faye Stewart of Ochlocknee, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Robin Scarboro, 70, of Alexandria, Va., died Saturday, May 6, 2006, in Alexandria, Va.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at Deep Bottom Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Voyles and the Rev. Shane Ashley officiating.

Born May 14, 1935, he was the son of the late Marguerite Newton Scarboro and he was an auto parts sales person.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Conner Scarboro.

Survivors include his sister, Jerry S. Meister of Norman Park; a niece, Kim Blumenstein from Concord, Calif.; nephews, Bill Meister of Conch Key, Fla., Bob Meister of Norman Park and Brad Meister, Madison, Fla.; a special friend, M. Antoinette Kelley; and special care givers, Matilda Bonsu, Elizabeth Dotsey, Winnifred Gyamfi, Gladys Gyamfuaah and Perpetual Gyamfuaah, all of Alexandria, Va.; and several great-nieces.

Wilma Ruth Welch Weldon

PAVO — Wilma Ruth Welch Weldon, 62, of Pavo passed away Wednesday at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Harrell-Faircloth Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Irions and the Rev. Bufford Groves officiating. Entombment will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at a later date. Zachary Carter, Kirk Weldon, Joseph Cannon, George Weldon, Randy Welch, Jr. Weldon, Thomas Roberts and Stacy Welch will serve as pallbearers.

Born Oct. 4, 1943, in Brooks County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Welch and the late Ruby Griffin Welch. She was a homemaker and devoted mother.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Welch; a grandson, Scotty Joe Cannon Jr.; a son, Franklin Luke Weldon; a great-grandson, Jonathan Aaron Tipton; and a nephew, David Justin Weldon.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Weldon of Pavo; two daughters, Regina Weldon and husband Mark of Pavo and Celina Giddens and husband William “Bug” Giddens of Meigs; two sons, Lavon Cannon and wife Evelyn and Scotty Cannon and wife Marjorie, all of Meigs; a brother, Buddy Welch and wife Betty of Moultrie; a sister, Willie Mae Weldon and husband Dennie of Pavo; 19 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Niki, Joseph and Sandra Cannon, Dawn, Thomas and Jennifer Roberts, Zachary and Kevin Carter, Angela Tipton, Rose, Wesley, George, Tiffany, Matthew, and Cody Weldon, and Elisha and Willie Giddins; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Jade and Cloe Tipton; and three nephews, Randy Welch, Danny Crosby and Kirk Weldon.
