MOULTRIE — Colquitt County middle school track team’s Miranda Trim claimed two championships and Darell Ward won another at the recent South Georgia Athletic Conference championships.
Trim, just a sixth-grader, won the 1,600-meter with a 5:57 and the 800-meter in a time of 2:43.
“Miranda didn’t just win,” Colquitt County middle school track coach Link Whittaker said.
“She blew away everyone else. She didn’t lose a race all year. As a sixth-grader, winning one race is unusual, much less every race you enter.”
Trim also took part in the long jump and had a jump of 13 feet, 3 inches.
Also winning a medal for the girls team was Persephone Taylor, who placed second in the discus with a throw of 79 feet.
“Persephone improved her distance with every meet and was able to post a new Colquitt middle school record in the discus,” Whittaker said.
Taylor also was fifth in the hurdles.
Ward won the 100 meter with an 11.73. He also was second in the 200 meters with a 24.50.
“Darell was our best performer all year,” Whittaker said. “His best event was the 400, but he cramped up around the last turn was couldn’t finish. I was happy that he recovered to do well in the 200.”
Ward also ran the 400 meters in 58.60.
Also winning a medal for the boys team was Tevin King, who finished third in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet, 10 inches.
“Tevin said before the meet that he was going for 17 feet,” Whittaker said. “I was proud of his performance. He got close and was able to take home a medal.”
King also turned in a time 12.50 in the 100-meter dash.
Jeremy Downs had been one of the boys team’s top performers all season, but had been sick for several weeks before the meet.
“He had been winning the hurdles all season and has the ability to win the long jump,” Whittaker said. “He couldn’t run (while sick) and it hurt him. Just a little bad luck for him.”
Downs was fifth in both the hurdles (14.11) and long jump (16 feet).
Gary Thomas also turned in a fifth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 110 feet.
“Gary went from 70 feet in his first meet to 110 in the region,” Whittaker said. “He has already set his sights on 120 feet for the start of next season. Hat’s off to his determination.”
Diamonte Ridley finished sixth in the hurdles with a 14.63.
Also competing for the boys were Draoone Hampton, long jump, 15 feet, 7 inches; Xavier Ward, shot put, 27 feet, 4 inches, and discus, 83 feet, 1 inch; Rashawn Hunt, shot put, 27 feet; Tre Scott, 200-meter dash, 31.0; Anthony Brumbley, 1,600 meters, 6:25; Ricky Williams, 800 meters, 2:45; Tommy Hudson, 800 meters, 2:49; Amel Magwood, 800 meters, 2:50; Alec Daniels, 800 meters, 2:51; and Kyler Thelesme, 800 meter, 2:52.
The 4×100 relay team of Ward, Hampton, Downs and LaDarian Simpson finished with a 49.06; the 4×100 relay team of Ridley, Williams, Demitri Suggs and Tre DeBruce ran a 49.65; the 4×200 relay team of Downs, King, Simpson and Hampton ran a 1:50.60.
The other 4×200 relay team of Suggs, Williams, DeBruce and Ridley ran a 1:55.40.
“Draoone Hampton was our most improved athlete over last year,” Whittaker said. “I could have put him in just about every event and he would have performed well.
“Hopefully, this large group of sixth- and seventh-graders will follow suit and be ready to go next year.”
The girls team also got solid performances from Umeika Henry, was fifth in the 200 meters with a 27.84, and Bria Wallace, who as fifth in the discus with a throw of 58 feet, 4 inches.
Henry also ran the 100 meters and turned in a time of 14.13. Wallace also entered the shot put and finished with a throw of 20 feet, 7 1/2 inches.
Also competing for the Colquitt County girls were Chancity King, long jump, 12 feet, 4 inches; Quantia Pittman, hurdles, 17.81; JeOna Williams, 200 meters, 30:04; Sara Strong, 400 meters, 1:13; Yanira Taylor, 100 meters, 14.80; and Germya Richardson, 400 meters, 1:20.

Whittaker said May placed seventh in the mile.
Wallace and Sage Frazier performed well in the 600 meters; Richardson and Strong ran well in the 400 meters; and JeOna Williams was strong in the 200 meters.
