MOULTRIE — Much of the buzz at the Region 1-AAAAA golf tournament at Sunset Country Club on Monday was over the 29 shot by Valdosta’s Jason Bennett on the back nine that gave him a 68 and the low medalist trophy.
There was an equally outstanding round turned in in the region’s girls tournament, which was being played simultaneously.
Colquitt County’s Anna Leigh Keith shot a 67 that helped the Lady Packers claim the girls region title.
Keith, who is just a freshman, and senior Lindsay Hargrove combined to shoot a 150 and win the girls title by 44 shots over second-place Coffee.
Both the Lady Packers and Lady Trojans will take part in the girls state tournament to be played on Monday, May 8 at the Indian Mounds Golf Course at Jekyll Island.
The significance of his team’s score was not lost on Colquitt County golf coach Donald Dale, who remembered that Glynn Academy won the girls state championship last year with a 150.
The Lady Terrors had scores of 75 from both Rebecca Durham and Laura Hall at Jekyll last May.
Rounding out the top four at the state tournament last year were Harrison, with a 160; Northview, with a 161; and Walton, with a 164.
The best individual score at the girls state tournament was a 71 shot by East Coweta’s Katelyn Stanier.
The outstanding round by Keith, one of the finest up-and-coming junior girls golfers in the state, was not a shock.
But the 83 posted by Hargrove was a pleasant surprise. It was the best round of the season for Hargrove, who has already signed to play at Thomas University next season.
Dale called the rounds by Keith and Hargrove “fantastic.”
Similar rounds at Jekyll Island in two weeks would put the Lady Packers in a position for a state championship.
The Lady Packers also got a 101 from Shannon Giddens and a 129 from Jill Flowers.
Coffee’s two counting scores were an 82 and a 112.
Trailing Coffee by 36 strokes and in third place was Lowndes, which shot a 230, counting a 95 and 140.
Houston County was one stroke further back at 231, counting a 114 and a 117.
