MOULTRIE — Although Abraham Baldwin College tennis coach Alan Kramer had no official favorite in Wednesday’s Region 1-AAAAA tennis tournament on the ABAC courts, he did get to enjoy himself when the Colquitt County girls played.
Kramer got to watch Lindsay Jacobs and Gracie Qurnell perform as the Lady Packers won their fourth straight region title.
And Jacobs and Qurnell performed just as Kramer hopes they will next season.
The Colquitt County High seniors, who played on all of the Lady Packers region championship teams starting in 2003, signed at Colquitt County High library on Friday to continue their playing careers at ABAC next season.
Kramer sounded pleased to be able to get a pair of players who are veterans of state tournament play.
“Colquitt County tennis has such a good reputation,” Kramer said. “And we think Lindsay and Gracie will help us get back to where we were in 1993-1999.”
The ABAC women’s tennis teams have been a perennial top-10 finisher in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament.
The Fillies won the Region XVII title last year and finished 10th in the nation.
ABAC’s women finished second in the nation in 1999. In both 1999 and 2000, the Fillies had the No. 1 singles player in the nation.
“Lindsay will fit right in the middle of our lineup,” Kramer said. “And Gracie is a fantastic doubles player. To have her is an added bonus. I can’t wait. I’m excited.”
The Fillies also will sign Nicole Hall from Berrien High.
Three players from Colquitt County girls team, which will take a 17-3 record into its first-round state tournament match, have now signed to play next season.
Anne Yearta, Qurnell’s doubles partner, will play at Young Harris next season and will compete against her current teammates.
Qurnell began playing USTA tournament as a sixth-grader and the next year played with the other four current Colquitt County seniors — Jacobs, Yearta, Monique Murphy and Landi Clark — on the middle school team led by current Lady Packer head coach Linda Berl.
By the time she was a freshman, she was playing No. 2 doubles with Elizabeth Singley on the team 2003 team that went 14-3.
Qurnell and Singley moved up to play No. 1 doubles the next year as the Lady Packers again advanced three rounds deep in the state tournament and finished 18-2.
Last year, she teamed up with Yearta and two have continued their outstanding work at No. 1 doubles. The two are 14-5 this season.
Berl has called Qurnell “a natural doubles player.”
Jacobs is following in the footsteps of older sister Ashley Jacobs, who was a Colquitt County senior playing No. 1 singles in 2003 when her freshman sister was playing No. 2 singles.
Ashley, now at Georgia Southern where she is majoring in biology, went on to play two seasons at ABAC.
In 2004, she teamed with Florencia Torres to the ITA Southeast Region women’s doubles championship.
Lindsay has the potential to do as well, or better.
“Ashley was a fantastic player,” Kramer said. “And we’re happy to get Lindsay. We didn’t take it for granted. We know she could have gone to many other places.”
After playing behind Ashley as a freshman, Lindsay has played No. 1 singles the last three seasons.
She helped lead the Lady Packers to the Final Four last spring and has a 17-1 record at No. 1 this season.
Lindsay got her start in the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation program and also has been coached by Mike Jenkins.
As a seventh-grader, she played on the middle school team.
She also has played the tough summer tournament circuit as she has improved her game over the last four years. Berl calls her the best singles player in the region this year.
Lindsay just laughed when asked about going to ABAC.
“It seems like the whole family’s gone there,” she said.
And while there are still some challenging high school matches ahead as the Lady Packers take aim at another berth in the Final Four, Lindsay said, “This has been a good year.”
Jacobs and Qurnell will have the opportunity to step in and play on the Fillies team that is losing four sophomores: Anna Daniel, Kelli Helms, Ambur Humphrey and Whitney Lightfoot.
