MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High gymnastics team broke the school record by three points when it scored a 111.95 in its meet at the Moultrie YMCA on Wednesday.

That score would have been good enough to win the state championship each of the last three years.

The last time a team posted anything close to that score in a state meet was in 2003 when Roswell scored a 111.225 to take the state championship.

“The girls were awesome,” said coach Donna Mar-shall. “They have worked hard and showed a lot of improvement from the Tifton meet.

“I was proud of our girls. Everyone contributed to the breaking of our school record.”

The meet was the third of the season for the Lady Packers and the last before the April 21 qualifying meet.

Three qualifying meets will be held.

The top three teams and top six individual finishers in each event will qualify for the state meet, which will be held on Friday, April 28, at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta.

They scored a 108.4 in their season-opener at the Thomasville YMCA and a 107.45 on March 24 at the Dream It Gym in Tifton.

Colquitt appeared right at home on its familiar apparatus in the Donald A. Blevins Gymnastics Center at the Moultrie YMCA.

Leah May was first all around and Meghan Marshall was second.

The Lady Packers were Donna Marshall said. May was first on beam with a 9.6. Marshall was second with a 9.5.

Krista Wood had an 8.25; Kaitlin Tucker, an 8.1; and Temira Davis, an 8.2.

Colquitt also was strong on vault.

Marshall had her highest vault score, a 9.725 to place first. May was second with a 9.55.

Rachel Dampier vaulted for the first time in the lineup and scored a 9.1.

“We can really use her on vault at the area meet next week in Atlanta,” Donna Marshall said.

Wood received an 8.7 and Crystal Blizzard scored and 8.675.

May had an excellent uneven bars routine and scored a 9.6 to place first. Meghan Marshall had a 9.35 to place third.

Both Tucker and Wood scored an 8.7, showing the team’s depth on bars.

Dampier also competed on bars and scored an 8.2.

“Our bar scores definitely improved since the Tifton meet as well,” Donna Marshall said.

The floor exercise turned out to be the highlight of the meet, Donna Marshall said.

“Our girls did an outstanding job,” the first-year coach said. “I was so proud of them. They proved that they are getting ready for the area meet next week.”

Meghan Marshall’s floor routine scored a 9.6 and place first. May had a 9.55 for second.

Dampier performed what her coach called a “powerful” routine and scored a 9.35. Wood’s routine earned a 9.425. Davis scored an 8.6.

Colquitt County competed against Tift County and Thomas County Central.

Bainbridge, Brantley County and Cairo competed against each other.
