MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County soccer teams continued their run toward the state tournament with victories over Coffee on Tuesday at Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field.
The Colquitt County girls started successful Senior Night with a 4-0 victory over the Lady Trojans that could easily have been much worse.
The Colquitt boys got a 2-1 victory over the Trojans that leaves them just a victory from securing a playoff berth.
The Lady Packers had 11 shots that deflected off the cross bar and forced the Lady Trojans keeper to make seven saves.
“We just pounded them,” said Colquitt coach Jimbo Jarvis.
Jarvis would like a similar result when his team travels to take on Houston County.
At 4-2, the Lady Bears trail the 6-2 Lady Packers in the battle for second place in Region 1-AAAAA behind 7-0 Tift County.
Houston will play host to Lowndes on Friday before meeting the Lady Packers.
The Lady Bears defeated the Lady Packers 5-4 on March 24 in Moultrie.
Colquitt would like to finish second in the region and play host to a first-round state playoff match.
“Our seniors would like an opportunity to step back on this field,” Jarvis said. “We’re playing well going into Houston.”
Coffee had just two shots on goal. The Lady Packers had 18, although they led just 1-0 before scoring three times in the final 13 minutes.
Freshman Alba Hernandez scored what proved to be the only goal Colquitt needed with 22:47 left in the first half.
With 12:55 remaining in the match, Kristin Hall drilled a shot off that caromed off the Coffee keeper. Hernandez was there to punch it into the net for her 24th goal of the season and a 2-0 Colquitt County lead.
Hall made it 3-0 when she scored on a corner kick with 6:43 left in the match.
Freshman Abbey Taylor scored the final goal on a nifty feed from Hernandez.
Regardless of what the Colquitt County boys do in their match with Houston County on Tuesday, a win at Tift County a week from Friday will give the Packers region’s No. 4 seed to the state tournament.
On Tuesday, the Packers rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the second half to raise their overall record to 6-9 and go to 3-5 in the region.
The match was scoreless in the first half and Coffee jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in second 40 minutes.
But Matt DeMott knocked in his fourth penalty kick of the season to tie the match with 21 minutes remaining.
Spencer Clayton then got the game-winner with just 2:15 remaining.
“That was a nice way to send the seniors off their home field,” said Packers coach Randall Balch. “The boys really stepped it up.”
Desperate to stay alive in the postseason hunt, the Packers used Clayton, Tyler Mobley and Stephen Adcock for all 80 minutes of the match.
